The green thing looks like a sprout. It might be the sprout of a pineapple plant or a green thippili (Long pepper)

In the first row between the ripe aracknuts and ripe pineapples you can see pepper spread and dried into black pepper. A pineapple field and some rubber trees are seen in between the snaps of green bananas and the ripe red coffee seeds in the hand.

To summarize the various posts so far , this is the best that India has to offer...
South Goa has a very famous chilli.......the Canacona chilli Black pepper and cardammom - Kerala Turmeric varieties: Alleppey Finger - Kerala Madras Finger and Erode turmeric - Tamil Nadu Rajapore and Sangli - Maharashtra Nizamabad Bulb - Andhra Pradesh For asafoetida - or hing ...the best known variety comes from Afghanistan and is known as "Hing-Talo-Mushq" ( meaning Hing dried in Cattle hide bags)...will be availible readily in North Indian cities...Chandni Chowk, Sadar ae good places in Delhi to buy.. Oh yes ...how can one forget the : - Large Cardamom from Trivandrum, Kochi and Ernakulum. - Kerelese Vanilla bark. - Dried red chillies from Rajasthan & Andhra Pradesh. and afcourse how can we forget: The big daddy of all spices & flavours: Precious Saffron from Kashmir Valley, now also grown in north-east, personally found the short thin Kashmiri Saffron much better and flavoursome than Spanish or Morrocan Saffron. Vaniila is a form of Orchid actually!! That grows up the trunk of trees!! Organic vanilla is available in South Goa, or at least it should be by now, it takes five years to produce pods!! Good cash crop! |
