* The incidence of neurocysticercosis, or cysts in the brain caused by tapeworm eggs, is reaching epidemic proportions in .. cities (in India)
* The vast majority of cases are caused by eating vegetables grown in soil or water contaminated by sewage
* Tapeworm eggs cling to vegetables like green coriander, spinach, salads, cabbage and enter the bloodstream when eaten raw or even lightly cooked, as in stir-fries. They can be lodged in the brain, where they form cysts.
* Symptoms of neurocysticercosis include persistent headache, numbness and tingling in the face or arms, visual changes, epileptic seizures.
* Treatment is complex, lengthy, often with debilitating side-effects
* Prevention: Wash vegetables throughly with potassium permanganate. When eating out, avoid salads, green coriander garnishes; shredded cabbage and carrot mixed into chowmein, vegetable stir-fries.

Thanks for this invaluable info SMsTranslator and others!!

Good grief, this is frightening. I thought I was safe because I never eat port. Now it looks as if I'll have to give up eating altogether!

Thankfully, I have never been a great one for either salads or stir fries, and I don't like coriander.

SMStranslator, thanks for that link. Clear and informative article.

The issue with veggies like cabbage is that most of it is grown in farms which are irrigated with contaminated water in india... You see all the sewage that flows to the rivers and they are used in farms.. effectively leading to worms and others.. add to this the poor sanitation of the vegetable handlers and this is a a big problem..

Washing veggies thoroughly and avoiding raw veggies outside is the only prevention. There are many herbal remedies for killing worms but i am not sure if they work

OK!Time to lay into livinhimalayas again! hammer hammer hammer!

What we have now is a realistic explanation and a sensible reason that can't be denied. Whilst it was some unspecified worm, all I could think was that I had been eating cabbage all my life...

Salads, raw veg and unpeeled fruit has always been on the no-no list, due to possible contamination by tap water, let alone where else it might have been.

Relative was admitted last week in MOOLCHAND HOSPITAL for knee transplant , they serve raw cabbage salad and cooked cabbage
subzi in patient diets once in day.
A.I.I.M.S must be continuing with cabbage in their diet plan.Doctors of A.I.I.M.S, when asked, told us after good washing no problems.
Lot of confusions.

as far as I know if you wash teh veggies properly and then soak it in potassium permanganate for a while it is safe to eat even raw. For root veggies wash them thoroughly, peel them and then eat them.
