Holi hai Bhang High
History:
Gods & Demons began to churn the ocean in order to obtain "Amrita" the nectar that bestows immortality. The demons tried to get control over it but the Gods foiled their attempt. The first thing to come out was a deadly poison for both Gods & the demons. Lord Shiva offered to imbibe it. Due to its effect Lord Shiva’s throat turned blue. Blue is "neel" & throat is "kantha". So whose throat is blue is called Neelkantha. This is one of Lord Shiva’s many names. When a drop of this Amrita nectar fell on earth the first cannabis plant was born. Geography: Bhang plants grow all over the north Indian plains & foot hills. It can be found in many places in Bihar & UP. Chemistry: The psychoactive substance that causes the high is Tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). This chemical is associated with increased cerebral high. Recipe: Water 1.5 litres Sugar 1-1/2 cups Milk 1-1/2 cups Almonds 8 pieces Water melon seeds 1 tbps. Poppy seeds ˝ tbps. Aniseed ˝ tbps. Green Cardamom seed ground to powder ˝ tsp. Black pepper corns 1 tsp. Soak all dry ingredients except sugar & Cardamom powder in water for 3 hours. Soak sugar in ˝ litre of water. Grind to a paste the soaked ingredients. Add 1 litre water to this paste & stir vigorously. Strain the extract through a piece of muslin. Squeeze till the residue is almost dry. Mix the extract with the dissolved sugar solution. Add the milk & Cardamom powder. The base is now ready. Wash clean Bhang leaves. Grind to a very smooth & sticky consistency. Mix the Bhang paste with the sherbet. You can add a bit of rose petal paste for flavouring. I have not mentioned the quantity of Bhang as it depends heavily on the potency of the leaves used & personal tolerance levels. Do keep in mind that it may take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours for the euphoria to set in. So refrain from over consumption. |

Bihar Bang
My first experience with this Bhang was in Patna on a weekend off from my Peace Corps stint in Nepal. I found a bar at about 9:00am and swigged beer to help swallow those nasty bisquits. Didn't know much about how the stuff worked, so I ate a second one within 10 minutes after nothing happened. A couple of hours later, while wandering along the banks of the Ganges river, it hit me. Hard. The sky melted. I spoke Hindi. I saw Allah, etc. Wasn't expecting such a massive punch, nor the extensive time to wear off. I wrote that day off and swore, never again, until next time! ![]() |

Speaking of Bhang...
I had Bhang chocolate melt in my cargo pants' pocket in Jaisalmer. Don't ask me why I put chocolate in my pocket - serious oversight on my part to say the least. I ended up washing the pants - what a waste of perfectly good bhang. |
