Besan Ladoo

I thought maa laddu was made from powdered dalia (maavu).

My MIL makes for us a big bag of the maa laddu powder every year. I only need to add hot ghee and form the balls. Of all the laddus, this kind is my fave. Laddu-mauli-hubby loves the boondi laddus.

I got confirmation that maa laddu is made with dalia. Dalia is roasted and split channa dal.
On another note....
Aparently, one can make besan laddu in the microwave. Cool!

If a person were to use rice flour instead of besan flour, would it be another name instead of "besan" ladoo? Would you brown the rice flour just like the besan?

Yes its called Ravaa ladoo, and yes you must roast the rice flour in LOTS of ghee along with cashews, almonds and whatever else you fancy.

What is the micro method? Can you also make rava laddu like that?

I tried the microwave recipe and was skeptical that the directions said to wait til the mixture cooled before forming the balls. Well, needless to say, it did not work too well. I was too lazy to reheat the mix so that the balls could be formed. Tasted good anyway! Here's the link to the microwave directions...

Thanks Kalyani. From your post I presume the balls have to be moulded while the mix is hot. Will try it sometime and post when I do.

Just went through that blog. The photos look very good indeed, will try the recipe sooner rather than later. Thanks again Kalyani, and do let me know if you experiment with rava ladu.
