Women's Quota
I'm sure it must be covered somewhere on this site, but after 2 hours of searching, I'm giving up! Anyone got any information on women's quota? I'm travelling alone (although I've travelled before on Indian trains but usually with people I know) and thought I should find out about how the women's quota works, how to book it, if it really makes any difference to safety - is it available on all trains and in all classes? Can I book it online or only at stations?
I'd only consider it on overnight trains of course, so probably: Mumbai to Ujain Khajuraho to Varanasi (haven't checked out how I do this journey) Varanasi - Bhubaneshwar Bubanashwar - Kolkota Any advice welcome.... By the way is it worth me taking a compact sleeping bag - I'm travelling in March from Mumbai - kind of West to East coast. I remember being cold in December on trains in Rajasthan and wishing I had sleeping bag. Dinah

I've never heard of a Women's Quota, and its not mentioned in the timetables. What makes you think there is such a thing?
There are women-only carriages on some trains, though its usually just the busy commuter trains that have them. There is a Tourist Quota on some trains - to find out which, look in the back of the relevant regional-timetable (not TAAG - Trains At A Glance). To get yourself on the Quota, you have to go to the computerised booking office and see the supervisor; bear in mind that you have no *right* for a place on it - it is up to the booking supervisor, so be friendly, patient and suitably subservient. You may be asked to show your passport. In smaller stations, you can try asking the station master for help. Tim in Ireland

I know about the tourist quota and how to get it... but thanks anyway. Dinah |

I think I used the women's quota last year while travelling in Rajasthan. As I booked on the net it was an option. What it meant is that just a section of a car was for women only. It didn't mean much because men were in and out all the time. It was not in all classes, and when I clicked to be in it, what I wanted was unavailable.
No men ever hassled me. I found the ones I had to travel with total gentlemen. If someone had I would have made a very vocal stink, and people would have come to my aid. At one point I was in a 2 tier compartment with a lock on a door(I was expecting curtains only) and two men, strangers to each other. One threw the lock on the door, I think not to be disturbed from the outside, and we travelled the night in total darkness. When we all rotated turns out to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I noticed the employee watching us like an eagle from his bunk. I had the feeling that all concerned were ready to hop to anyone's aid if there was hassling. |

Ladies Quota!
http://www.irctc.co.in/
This is the website you use to book your rail tickets online. When you book a ticket there will be 2 boxes -- one for General Quota, one for Ladies Quota. I tried clicking Ladies, but there was no availability for the ticket class I wanted. I clicked General, then I had no problem. As for Foreigner Quota, you can not book that online. I have two confirmed tickets, General Quota, one for a 9 hour trip to Madurai, the other a 17 hour trip back to Chennai from Rameswaram. I am not worried, scared, nervous, whatever, about either train trip, in fact, I'm looking forward to them, toilets ( ) and all.
