WL / RAC Confirmation logic

Hi

I am new to the forum. I chanced upon this wonderful forum a few days ago and ever since I have become a big fan. Wonderful information.

I have a query.

How does the confirmation of WL /RAC logic work. Many a times I have had the agony of the ticket in WL till chart preparation and getting confirmed in the chart. Till chart preparation there is very little or insignificant change in the status. 2 months back I booked 2 tickets from Chennai to Coimbatore by Nilgiri exp in 3A in tatkal quota. But I found atleast 10 berths were vacant in the train (the chart itself showed 10 berths vacant). A co passenger said that he booked the ticket in the morning in WL & got confirmed where as I had paid tatkal charges 5 days earlier.

How to reasonably guess the WL position one can take a chance and book.

I have booked 3 tickets by 2601 Chennai Mangalore Mail from Chennai to Tirur and tha staus is WL168/WL101 to WL170/WL103

The return is by 2624 Chennai Mail from Trichur to Chennai & status is RLWL126/RLWL94 to RLWL128/RLWL96. The has insignificant change from date of booking to now. Should I atleast book the return thro' tatkal

Hello rajumds and welcome to indiamike.com

I've no time to look into these trains and these waitlists, but just had to quickly reply.

I've got 5 A4 sheets in front of me, full of notes of things I have to add to a new thread I'm doing, the thread will be about waitlists and RAC (I'll get this thread completed sometime next weekend), then I'll be doing a thread about finding a train/carriage/berth at a station, this one will go into details about reservation charts.(maybe a month for this thread)

The vacant berths....could be many things, unused qouta, maybe berths earmarked for passengers from another station.

The only thing I can suggest about the chances of the waitlist coming down, is to check how many berths are available for the total quota (look at availability for 90 days ahead), then look at booking patterns (look a week/month ahead, see if many more tickets are being sold on that day of the week/group of days), see if there are any holidays/festivals around your time of travel, see how the waitlist moves in the last week or few days (other days, not your day of travel, see if any pattern emerges), and if your really concerned, go to the departing station and have a look at the reservation chart of the same train, have a look at the final movements to get an idea of what kind of waitlist number will be OK, or ask a TTE, finally, go to the temple and prey for good fortune.

Dear Raju,

A co passenger said that he booked the ticket in the morning in WL & got confirmed where as I had paid tatkal charges 5 days earlier.

##When the status was in "waiting list", you booked a Confirmed Berth under Tatkal Quota.

##Whereas your co-passenger, initially took a normal Waiting List Ticket, which got confirmed against unutilised berths under Tatkal Quota!!!!

##It is extremely difficult to predict whether the Tatkal Quota will be tapped by the passengers - partially or fully.:-)
