All classes are good for their value for money..all classes are almost equally safe, given that you take given precautions..

A lot depends on your Budget and kind of comfort you need.

You chose your level of comfort and take your choice.

Consider also that as the more expensive classes not only have better facilities, they may have fewer small children, making for a more peaceful journey.

Night or day? Again, purely personal, though those who know your route can advise on whether it is worth seeing the view in daylight, or whether it is better slept through.

If you are new to India (or maybe you are just new to Indian trains?) then I'd say that any view will be fascinating!

The class wont matter if you're planning to go before the new year, there will be no seats/berths left.

But surely you'd already know that?

Info info info....

Money can't be important, or you would have mentioned it.

The children are both 5 or over, or you would have mentioned it.

Date of travel?

Overnight trains are used to save time/money, but you would have mentioned if these things were important.

So, a daytime train has great scenery, so try one.

There are 4 main daytime trains, but one starts too early (05:30) and only has seats (though it only takes 8 hours), 2 of the trains arrive too late or don't stop at all the stations in Goa (as you don't mention where you're going to in the State of Goa), and start quite a distance from Colaba (as that's where you may be staying)

2-tier air con and 3-tier air con would get you 6 berths together, first class air con wouldn't.

So 2 or 3-tier air con on the daytime train.

The best choice on the limited info you offer is Train 0103, it departs Mumbai CST daily at 06:55 and gets to the first station in north Goa at about 17:00, then the other stations in north & Central Goa by 18:45, it has both 2 & 3-tier air con.

If you want south Goa you may have to take a train to Madgaon (central Goa) then get another train from there to Cancona (south Goa).

Hi Steven,

Here is some additional information.

>Date of travel?

18.2.2008

>stations in Goa (as you don't mention where you're going to in the State of Goa),
>and start quite a distance from Colaba (as that's where you may be staying)

We have only flight tickets from Helsinki to Mumbai and a plan is to stay in Mumbai for a day(18.2) and at 19.2 take a train to somewhere in Goa don't know yet.

Any recommendation will be appreciated, we do not have pre-booked hotel so we try to seek for hotel on location. Is this a good or bad idea?

You need to do some research on Goa, it's a big state with maybe 30-40 beach resorts, they range from the ones full of drunken British package tourist to the ones full of drunken Russian tourists, but there are also some quieter beaches and some great cities, some wonderful markets, wildlife options close by, a good few historic sites and some nice river cruises can be found as well.

But I'm not the person to ask about Goa as I prefer other places in India.

Have a look in the Goa forum. (click here for the Goa forum)

Good luck.
