Which Station in Varanasi?
I am preparing to buy my overnight train ticket from Agra to Varanasi on Sept. 28, however, it is unclear as to which station I should get off at. I am staying at the Rashmi GuestHouse on the river. Do I go to the Varnasi JN(BSB) station or the other station (I forgot the name)and I cannot seem to get the name from the irtc website as it is not working at this moment? Please advise. Any information you can give will be most appreciate

I left from the Other station! I can pronounce the name but I don't dare try to spell it. I remember we took a rikshaw there, I think it took about 20-25 minutes.
Interesting place! |

I thought Varanasi Cantonment and Varanasi Junction were the two stations, but now I believe they may be two different names for the same station and the other station is something like Mughal Serai ... or something ... ?

I think you are referring to Mughalsarai ( http://experts.about.com/e/m/mu/Mughalsarai.htm ) Not sure about the location of the Rashmi GH so unable to suggest which station would be better. But I prefer Mughalsari for plenty of train options. It is well connected to other cities of India. 3008 Udyan Ava TOOFAN EXP from AGRA CANTT - 12:50 (Mughalsarai at 00.58) 2178 CHAMBAL EXPRESS from AGRA CANTT - 05:10 (Mughalsarai at 20.00) But there are so many trains from AGRA FORT station. You can spot your train from: http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_metro_trns.html - Somnath

Varanasi Jn is almost certainly the closest station, Mughal Sarrai is some 17 Kms from Varanasi, and Varanasi City station has hardly any trains calling there.

If you can get a train that goes to BSB, that can be more convenient. However, lots of trains don't stop at BSB, only MGS Mughal Sarai), and if that fits your schedule better, you can get an autorickshaw from MGS to Varanasi.
Have you been in touch with your guest house? They might be helpful in this case. They can help you make sure the driver from the train station gets you to the right place--many drivers in Varanasi will try to take you to the wrong guest house, so it's good to have an insider guiding you. |

we got an overnight train from agra to BSB station in varanasi. we stayed at hotel alka and they picked us up from the station. it didnt take long in a rickshaw, though we did have to walk the last bit as rickshaws arent allowed.
hope this helps. by the way, that overnight train (apparently) usually runs a few hours late. |

The train is scheduled to leave Agra at 9:15 p.m. and arrive in Varanasi at 9:30 a.m. the next day, however I have heard from many travelers that it is always late by hours. I am not looking forward to that.

Get off the train at Varanasi Jn station.
I'm guessing the other station is Moghul Serai. Even if the train stops there its not the end of the world - just a longer taxi ride plus you get a nice view of the river from the bridge!Dont worry too much about the train being late. It often happens. Chris. |

all the above is true...
however, this was the only train journey of ours out of about a dozen that was late... try to make the most of all that extra time you'll have on the train... good luck! |
