What is the difference Jan Shatabdi and Shatabdi Express Trains?
Is there a difference between Jan Shatabdi Express and Shatabdi Express Trains? Back in '97 when I was last in India I remmember traveling in AC Chair Class in the Shatabdi Express Train from Delhi to Jaipur and really disliking the experience since I could not see out of the windows (small/tinted/dirty). I have recently seen some images of the interior of a Jan Shatabdi Express train which looks distinctly better . I am right in thinking that they are an improvement, i.e with larger windows.

I travelled on the Jan Shatabdi from New Delhi to Dehra Dun in April. Unfortunately, every window in my carriage had the outer pane vandalised but repaired. My particular window was crazed so that there was light coming in but no view of the passing countryside. I thought at the time that damaged chair class carriages might be reassigned from Shatabdi trains to cheaper Jan Shatabdi sevices. I wonder if such vandalism is common.
All coaches in Shatabdi express are air-conditioned ones (AC standard and AC executive are only two classes).
Jan-Shatabdi have some AC standard coaches and some non-AC coaches (all seating, no sleeping berths).
Otherwise, cost, crowd, food, speed, no. of station wise they are almost same.

Shatabdi Express provides food free of cost (actually included in the fare) but Jan Shatabdi Express does not provide foods. You have to purchase it in your own cost from the pantry car.S.E are full AC coaches but JSE has some AC and other NON-AC coaches.Fare is more in SE than JSE.Other things are almost same.

This is what I've heard, but some of it may be wrong.
Jan is short for Janata (people), Shatabdi = new century.
The Jan Shatabdi (People's Shatabdi) was introduced as an 'affordable' Shatabdi, to give 'lower income' people the chance to use these high speed trains.
2S (bookable 2nd class seat) on a Jan Shatabdi is one of the best value seats on Indian Railways, the prices are so low that I don't need to find an example to show you, you will get a padded seat and because the 'windows' have only bars, you will be able view the countryside as you travel (the glass windows in Air Con Chair Class can be difficult to see through), the lower classes on Indian Railway often have a problem with ticketless people entering the carriages during the day, but this doesn't happen on the Jan Shatabdi’s.
2S is not air-conditioned.
I've heard that if there are any delays, the Shatabdi has less chance of being affected than the Jan Shatabdi as the Shatabdi is viewed as more prestigious, this can make a difference when travelling on a single track or behind a slower train.
Also, from the rail news that I see, the Shatabdi's are very high on the list when it comes to new, replacement carriages, the Jan Shatabdi's are not.

This is the reason which makes them 'superfast' not the actual speed difference...
They are given priority over any other train and every train has to make way for Shatabdi/Rajdhani Express..

The prestigious Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express train rakes are scheduled to be replaced by the new LHB coaches manufactured under license from LHB, Germany, here at Railway Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Punjab. The two Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani (Mumbai Rajdhani & August Kranti Rajdhani) and the two Kolkata-New Delhi Rajdhani (Howrah Rajdhani & Sealdah Rajdhani) expresses have already got these new rakes.
The coaches are a vast improvement from the earlier ones. Totally air-conditioned, better braking system, better safety systems like anti-telescopic and anti-climb features in case of accidents, better toilets, and larger windows with clear glasses for better viewing. Some Shatabdi Expresses have also been replaced. Indian Railways plans to replace all Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express rakes with these good quality coaches. They are also capable of be pulled at 160 km/hr, and can this match the capacity with the new WAP-5 and WAP-7 Electric Locomotives (white coloured with orange stripes) manufactured under license from ABB at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, West Bengal. These are 6000 Horse Power 3-phase electric locomotives with regenerative braking system and are capable of hauling a 23-24 coach rake at 160 km/hr with ease, which is be further upgradable to 200 km/hr.
This is a picture of the LHB coaches of the Howrah Rajdhani shot by me at Liluah coaching yard, Howrah. The train is being shunted and readied for its journey in the evening.

Another one, this is the picture of the WAP-7 electric locomotive (although seen here hauling the older Rajdhani coaches). This is the perfect match for the LHB coaches to churn out their optimum utilization. This was shot by me one year earlier.

jan shatabdi express are for middle class and for poor people...this trains stop at many stations while shatabdi trains are for upper middle class people and rich people bcauze its fully air conditioned thus the tickets prices are high and shatabdi train just stop at important stations
Really ???
So if somebody is rich, he can't travel in Jan Shatabdis ? Then why there is an AC coach there ?
And what's your opinion about about Gareeb raths ?
