waiting list status question

i have booked a W/L ticket from Hampi (Hospet) in 2A. When I booked the ticket, it said that my status was WL1. I though that meant I was top of the list The train's availability status then was WL1/WL1
Then I checked the train's availability status again the next day and was very pleased to see it said WL11/WL9. From reading past threads, I figured this meant there were 11 people on the list, but 2 had cancelled and thus I, being the first on the list, was going to get a seat.
But then when I looked up my PNR status, it still said WL1. Shouldn't it have said that I've now got a seat (or rather a bed)?
And if it stays as WL until my trip (this weekend), will I still be able to get on the train in the general carriage and then (hopefully) pursuade the TTE to find me a bed?

Take it for granted that you'll get a seat WL1 is too close

the three people who cancelled are already WL passengers behind you! How will the queue move for you if someone standing behind you have left

Most of the cancellations happen at the last day or so.

You can also check the status over the voice guided system over telephone

Dial 1361 or 1362 or 1363 (for English ,Hindi or Local state language) They are charged at local call rate. Most of the big towns have this facility.

You can check the availability of seats (you should know the train no.)
or
check the current status of the reserved ticket. You need to enter the PNR Number (Passenger Name Record) when requested by the voice automated system.

Even if you ticket is not confirmed, go to the respective class coach and check with the TTEiside the train. The cancellations done after the 'chart' is printed are not updated online due to obvious reasons.Usually the chart is printed a few hours before the departure of the train. Theses & the 'absant' seats are issued by the TTE inside the train based on the WL status.
