Varanasi - Kujharhao

Varanasi - Kujharhao

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have been looking at the guidebook at modes of transport from Varanasi to Kujharhao (sp?). Can't figure out whether it's best to go by bus or train and then bus. Can anyone tell me from experience?

Thanks.

@@@Please check-up from Jet Airways, whether they are still operating the Delhi-Varanasi-Khajuraho Daily Flight 9W-723 whose departure at Varanasi was 12.20 hrs. & arrival in Khajuraho at 13.00 hrs.

Maybe there was no need to print full timetable with all stops because trains in India go rarely on time or you have extracted this chart from ready to use timetable?
for priyasingh
I am sure many thousands travellers go between Khajuraho and Varanasi every year and some of them probably posted report about their experience here. If you will not find their report here is mine - best way to go to Khajuraho is daily plane by Jet Airways (around 87 dollars), 40 minutes.
if not possible try train upto Mahoba (mentioned earlier by vsp25779) or Satna (1094 Varanasi Mumbai Mahanagiri Express, departure 11.30 from Varanasi Junction, 61/2 hrs, 157/411/635 Rs for sleeper/3AC/2AC).
This way you will suffer less, road conditions in Madhya Pradesh make travel by bus a trip from hell. If to share with others i't still better to hire jeep in Satna or Jhansi.
There is also direct bus between Varanasi and Satna proceeding to Khajuraho - the trip 421 km costs 209Rs and lasts at least 12-15 hrs and I met one French girl who braved its rigors. But for her it was not the first long bus journey in India, she was adapted to them.

Yes, it is not a normal journey when you do it by bus as there are no luxury buses from these places and the best you get is the worst you can ever imagine travelling on in India!!! I know from past experience when I travelled from Khajuraho to Varanasi in 2005 and that too in the hot summer heat in the month of April. Even though I am an Indian from Mumbai, I was also not prepared for this journey but my Iranian friend did not mind it though she did feel a bit tired at the end of the journey. I doubt if I would have taken the bus if I was travelling alone and would have done the train from Mahoba or Satna, but I guess once you are on the bus it does not matter much how much you are travelling as you tend to get used to the way people behave and get to experience a different way of life not possible to see anywhere else. I think I made the right choice of going along in the bus and not waiting for a train ride the next day as we were not getting confirmed tickets that day. But from the foreigner's viewpoint and considering the bad or almost non-existant roads in Madhya Pradesh, I would still advise the train route if possible. The bus should only be the last resort though it is well worth the experience. I have done the Satna to Khajuraho journey twice as well and it is really a back breaking journey!!!

Cheers,
Aadil.

Dear davyd,
Thanks.

Your observation:-
""Maybe there was no need to print full timetable with all stops because trains in India go rarely on time or you have extracted this chart from ready to use timetable?""
---------
@@@I am extracting the Time-table from the Indian Railway's Web Site only. This is being done for the benefit of our esteemed Members, as a quick reference.
=====================
In addition to 1108 from Varanasi to Harpalpur, 1159 (tri-weekly)/1181 (weekly) are there from Mughalsarai to Harpalpur. Please see this:-
.....
11 MGS MUGHAL SARAI JN 1 03:22 03:32 673 2
23 HPP HARPALPUR 1 13:29 13:30 1133 2
.......
===============
In any case, which is the nearest Rail-head (**distance-wise) for Khajuraho - is it Satna (or) Mahoba (or) Harpalpur (or) Jhansi & the frequency of Transport - taxi as well as Buses? Of all these 4 Roads, which one is reasonably good?

Satna or Mahoba

Mahoba is closer to Khajuraho of course but it is small town with occasional old trains and 3 daily buses to Khajuraho. Satna is big busy city on the way from Mumbai to Allahabad and 4-5 buses daily to Khajuraho. Buses in MP usually go up to 1-3 PM, depend on the distance. Last buses may be cancelled. That necessitates unexpected night waitings for early bus in nearby dreary hotels. Before going to bed though it's wise to know about current timetable from different sources and arrive to bus stands earlier - to book a seat. To occupy some place in dilapidated old rat traps there are strict rules. Once I was lucky to secure last available seat to Khajuraho when I arrived to bus stand in Jhansi at 4.30 AM half an hour before departure.
I don't know which roads to Khajuraho may be called better - body still remembers all bumps.

Try Alliance air flights. They are pre-fixed with code CD. They are often cheap.
