Is it worth it to try to upgrade from ac2 to ac1 class?
And is it possible to do it on the train if space available?

Are you talking about the Indian Railway option to automatically upgrade?

that is different thing and cannot be done on train...Or can it be...

I guess it is used if currently no berths are available in upper class, however if availability is there at later stage then your ticket would be upgraded !!

I've not really looked into it, so could easily be wrong.

But my understanding is......If there is a waitlist in the class your booked into, but seats/berths available in the next highest class, you have a chance of being upgraded (free).

That seems to be correct...however I doubt the free part..

I have just checked IRCTC..this is what they have to say..so mention for free thing...

The Class of travel may be upgraded automatically to the next higher class. If you do not want to be considered for upgradation, Please uncheck the option box.

It's definitely free.

The automatic upgrade is done by Indian Railways to get more waitlisted passengers onto the train.

It's completely different if a ticket holder requests an upgrade, the ticket holder would then have to pay the difference in fare to travel in the higher class.

I am still not convinced..you mean to say that if sleeper class tix are not available then IR will make me travel by 3AC at no extra cost !!

If this was the case, then the checkbox would not be there while booking..they would have done it automatically as no passenger would not be interested in a free upgrade..!!

The automatic upgadation of passengers is being provided without any additional financial burden on passengers. Pl see http://www.indianrail.gov.in/extended.htm

I guess, the check box has been provided to have option for Yes/No. If I am travelling with my family, I will opt for 'NO' as there is no guarantee that the upgraded passengers will get the preferred berths and that too in one bay. Moreover, there are some passengers travelling in SL class who may not be comfortable in travelling in AC coaches.

Yes, provided you have confirmed berth reservation in SL class. Auomatic upgradation is done on 'first come first serve' basis provided passengers have opted for automatic upgradation at the time of reservation and have confirmed berths.

Thanks a lot Sadanand for clarification...now everything seems to be logical...

Now this leads to another question...when do they upgrade the tickets ?? like sleeper class gets full before 15 days from the date of journey..so do they start upgrading at that moment itself OR is there a cutoff time before the departure of the train..

One of the terms and condtions of the automatic upgradation facility states that the upgradation will be automatically done by PRS at the time of charting. Normally, charting is done 4 hours before the schedule time of departure of trains.

Upgrading it on the train is a bit dicey especially on the major routes. Senior railway officials, politicians and senior Govt. employess travel by 1AC and number of 1AC coaches is very limited.
Travelling 1AC with family is one of my occasional indulgence.

I have not so far travelled in 1AC. I do have some fascination to travel in 1AC with my family. What puts me off is the fact that the berths in 1AC are allotted at the time of charting and with many VIPs travelling in 1AC, I get a feeling that at the last moment, TTE/conductor will tell me that due to some technical reasons (read last minute accommodation to VIPs), you have been allotted berths in 2AC .
