Are there trains from Udaipur to Jailsalmer direct. What's the best way of getting to Jaisalmer via Udaipur? Is it advisable to reserve tickets in advance. Am planning on going in October.

Other than that going via Jodhpur and by train from there would probably be your best option. There used to be trains from Udaipur to Jodhpur but from many a thread here it seems unclear or even unlikely if they're still running. If you're gonna a catch a bus anyway I'd steam right ahead to Jaisalmer. With the buses enquiring a day ahead or so should normally do it.

Buses?

Am not too confident about the buses in India --- are they confortable? Was thinking of changing the itinerary .... I want to travel from Delhi to Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer. I have about 15 days - how should I arrange it so that I can travel by train to these places.

Buses are alright, you have state buses and private buses and both come in a variety of luxury (wishful thinking) and not-so luxury buses if I haven't completely lost it. The padded experience is probably private only. Today there are sleeper buses as well I think with reclining seats or even some sort of beds, don't ask me how you keep from rolling out of them (when I was there reclining seats meant an inch or so so hardly worth the extra money & you have the person in front of you in your lap. Think economy class on a plane.) Buses soon lose out to trains on longer distances of course in terms of comfort, just like anywhere in the world. Conversely for short to moderate distances they can be quicker and a lot easier to instantly get a hold of, I found them often the better option in Rajasthan really. It's amazing how in India a day-long bus trip soon becomes a piece of cake for want of other options on some stretches though, whereas at home I'd think twice about it and rather pay the extra buck for a little comfort. So for the 600 kms a stop in Jodhpur might be a worthwhile consideration, well worth a visit anyway.

If you are not comfortable with buses, perhaps take a train to a destination a bit closer to Jaisalmer and then a bus from there.

train and car to Jaisalmer

What's the closest train station to Jaisalmer which has links to Udaipur and how much would it cost to travel between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer by taxi? Would one day be enough to see Jodhpur and can we leave our luggage at the train station at Jodhpur if we wish to do a day visit?

Udaipur to Jodhpur

What I wanted to know was how much does it cost to go between Udaipur and Jodhpur by car and how long does the ride take? If there is no train direct to Jodhpur from Udaipur, are there any trains that get to Jodhpur via other towns?

I would be looking at busing it Jodhpur. From what I rmember it is dirt cheap, even for the luxury bus. An overnight sleeper on the train from Jodhpur to Jais travelling in 3A (aircon) is Rs. 399 (about AUD12).

This is what we are doing in Oct (and have booked the train online already). The place we are staying in at Udaipur said they would take care of the bus booking when we get there.

we got a deal at Udaipur for a car to take us to Jodpur for 1900 rupees - but 2000 - 2500 was the average qutoe. we got to see Khumbalgarh and Ranakpur on the way which was well worth it. when we reached Jodpur we stayed at Devi Bharwan Guesthouse, who organised a cool Bishnoi safari (half a day). After that we got the train to Jaisalmer. The train left at about 7am, so perfect timing and then onto Jaisalmer. I would recommend the drive, although we tried buses and found them to be fine, I think seeing the sites between Jodpur and Udaipur is well worth it.

From another recent thread it turns out there are definitely no trains from Udaipur to Jodhpur. I'm not the train expert here (Steven_ber is so maybe ask him) but if you want to train it this might mean you have to go via Jaipur, quite a detour. As noted above I'd catch a bus to Jodhpur (or a car with some sightseeing if that's what you want) then a train to Jaisalmer. Doing Jaisalmer for just a day doesn't do justice to the place I think, nor to the distance perhaps. Spending one day at Jodhpur's fort and strolling around the bazaar should be OK, a couple of days is always nicer of course, but if you only have 15... make it a full day in Jodhpur then the overnight train to J'mer if you can.

Could you tell me how you arranged for the car from Udaipur to Jodhpur? If we took a bus, how long does it take?

How does the following sound?

Day 1

Delhi to Agra.

Train 2002 departs New Delhi daily at 06:00 and gets to Agra Cant at 08:10

Executive chair class = Rs 720
Air con chair class = Rs 370

Or

Train 2180 departs New Delhi daily at 07:15 and gets to Agra Cant at 10:07

Air con chair class = Rs 266

Spend day in Agra, stay in Hotel.

Day 2

In the morning go to Fatehpur Sikri.

Train 284 Agra fort 08:10, Fatehpur Sikri 09:08.

As the trip between Agra & Fatehpur Sikri is short, you are best to just buy a second class (unreserved) ticket. (less than Rs50)

See how the day goes, at some point you need to get a bus or a taxi to Bharatpur (30 Kms), then an overnight train to Udaipur.

Train 2963 departs Bharatpur daily at 23:08 and gets to Udaipur at 08:30.

1A = Rs 1977
2A = Rs 1057
3A = Rs 691
SL = Rs 265

Day 3 and 4

Udaipur.

Day 5

Bus or taxi from Udaipur to Kumbhalgarh.

Day 6

Bus or taxi from Kumbhalgarh to Ranakpur.

Day 7

Falna is about 40 Kms from Ranakpur, From Falna you can get any of the following trains to Jodhpur.

Train 4708 departs Falna daily at 06:03 and gets to Jodhpur at 10:05 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Train 9111 departs Falna daily at 16:58 and gets to Jodhpur at 20:05 (2A, SL.)

2-tier air con (2A) = Rs 472
3-tier air con (3A) = Rs 281
Sleeper class (SL) = Rs 121 (not air con)

Day 8

Spend a day in Jodhpur, then an overnight train to Jaisalmer.

Train 4810 departs Jodhpur daily at 23:15 and gets to Jaisalmer at 05:15.

3-tier air con (3A) = Rs 399
Sleeper class (SL) = Rs 152 (not air con)

Day 9 & 10

Jaisalmer.

Day 11

Jaisalmer then afternoon (& overnight) train to Jaipur.

Train 4060 departs Jaisalmer daily at 15:30 and gets to Jaipur at 05:00 the next day.

2-tier air con (2A) = Rs 1073
3-tier air con (3A) = Rs 690
Sleeper class (SL) = Rs 256

Day 12 & 13

Jaipur

Day 14 (or day 15)

Another day in Jaipur (or Amber Fort) then an evening train to Delhi.

Train 2016 departs Jaipur (doesn't run on Wednesdays) at 17:45 and gets to New Delhi at 22:25.

Executive chair class = Rs 1020
Air con chair class = Rs 535

You can get all those trains booked in advance using an Indrail pass.

A 15 day Indrail pass in 2-tier air con (also covers 3-tier air con, Air con chair class and 2nd class unreserved) would cost US$ 185.

Is an Indrail pass worth the money?
