Travel Mumbai to Goa

know that this question has probably been asked a million times before in different ways but I am getting very confused from reading all the threads so hoping someone can help me.

My boyfriend and I are arriving in Mumbai at midday on 30 December, (to spend 6 months in India, hurrah!) we really really want to make it down to Goa for NYE.
What is the best way to get there do you think? Ideally we'd like to get the train or bus as I'm sure it will be cheaper but do you think this is too risky and we might not get there in time? Will transport get booked up in advance or can we get on arrival? Would like to book tickets in advance if poss.

It is necessary for you to book your train tickets rightaway, over the internet. The website is http://www.irctc.co.in However, you have to specify an address in Mumbai for the tickets to be delivered .

A convenient train for you is the 0111 Konkan Kanya Express, which leaves Mumbai CST at 23=00 and reaches Madgaon at 10=45 the next morning.

You also need to book your accomodation at Goa now !

All the best !

I think Jobu (like myself) is confused; your typing seems Indian yet your location is listed as USA.

The fact that your first post is recommending a travel agent will always raise suspicions.

Can you give us more info?

Remember buses have 2 big advantages against train:
u can get seats @ the last moment .. no prior booking
buses ENSURE ur own seat

Also bombay goa road (NH 17) is pretty decent

dadar has max travel agents in bombay and so if u dont get buses anywhere else u can always reach there and try for last moment

Mumbai has 2 major parallel running suburban railway network .. but they meet at dadar .. almost center of bombay .. its a railway station

Also trains goin to other parts of india halt at dadar

more info on Mumbai_suburban_railway

Its a big and important suburb

Thus the travel origins are here

Hi Peaky,

Im doing exactly the same thingas you, only a day later.
Had you considered flying with Deccan Air? They offer really good prices.

www.airdeccan.net

Does anyone know how long the bus takes? Or does anyone have any website addresses or company names so that I can research timetables etc?
Flights from Mumbai to Goa are sold out for the afternoon of the 31st so I may have to travel overland.

Peaky, Id be interested to hear how you get on.
Have you booked any accommodation in Goa yet?

Nightmare!
Do you have any suggestions of any other ways of getting from Mumbai to Goa on the 31st? I arrive in Mumbai at lunchtime...Air Sahara have offered to put me on a waitlist for a flight down Goa but I dont want to rely on a waitlist to get me there...

You can also consider taking the day train from Mumbai to Goa - if you have time to spare. the route is quite interesting. i dont know the exact timing, but there is a train which reaches madgaon by around 6 pm or so.

I've just been on the website http://www.irctc.co.in which has timetables and you can book on, but you have to register with office and residential address and I think it needs to be an Indian one, I'm not sure what to do about this as don't have address in India, but I would like to book trains if poss.
Havn't got any accomadation booked in Goa yet, we were just planning on turning up and finding some kind of beach hut, but maybe that is being short sighted?

Joliecouer - where are you planning on going in Goa? are you booking accomadation? From what I can see from this forum it seems Vagator is the best place to be for parties...

As soon as I figure out a way of getting to Goa in time for NYE im going to book myself some accommodation. I would imagine that beach huts and any other kind of accommodation are in hot demand at that time of year.

This will be my first trip to India so I can only go off what I have read in guide books and on forums like this one. From what Ive read, Vagator is definitely the place to go, Disco Valley in particular.
