That's OK with us. We do not necessarily look for the cheapest place. We want the best value for money though...
Unfortunately Yatri House wrote that they are fully booked, so I'm gonna have to keep on looking. That makes me question - we wanted to spoil ourselves for one night in a hotel like "Lake Palace" in Udaipur. Do you think i can book it two or three days in advance or do is it best to book now? I'm afraid to book now, and not manage to get there on time, as we are new and still not familiar with all the traffic and stuff... Quote:

For a nice hotel (no bathtub - just shower), try the Hotel Ajanta.
AC rooms; clean; reasonably priced and, it's quieter than the main bazaar of Pahar Ganj. They can do airport pickup & will wait for you at the arrivals lounge. Cheers Zoltan

Bathtubs can be a bit of a disapointment in India. I know I've looked forward to them in some of the posher hotels I've stayed in (a long, hot soak has always been one my indulgences) and then found that, after a few minutes, I get out of the bath feeling hotter and sweatier than when I got in.
I never even had a shower in my London house, but here they seem to just work --- depending on where you are and the time of year, of course, Chennai ranges from warm and humid to hot and humid. My requirement is hot water. The hotter I am the more horrible I find a cold shower! |

If you are having a problem figuring out how to book a train just wander into any travel agent who books busses and they will do it for you and you usually can pick up your ticket the same day. 1st class sleeper is nice but the most expensive altho by western standards not expensive at all. I do 2nd class sleeper and it is just fine. Happy trails.

Bathtubs.....can think of 3 mid-range places that I've stayed in, 3 corners of India though, Jasvilas in Jaipur, Fairlawn in Calcutta, and a place opposite the train station in Trivandrum, yet I've only taken one bath, I just can't use all the water needed for a bath, the water in India is just too precious to be wasted on a tourist.

On the downside, though, when we checked in to the Ajanta we were taken to a small travel agency office and given the hard sell on tours and excursions while our rooms were "being prepared". We felt quite uneasy, and would have gone elsewhere if we had not booked and paid in advance. Despite paying for superior rooms we were given two very small, drab standard rooms (until we complained). And the hotel breakfast is vile. Apart from that, though, the Ajanta was a perfectly acceptable budget option and very conveniently located for New Delhi railway station.
