Question Trains Udaipur or ?

Well - as basically everybody says "You have not been to India without taking a part of your journey by train" I think I need a bit of help.

I kind of get the impression that Udaipur is not quite well connected by trains due to the narrow gauge, but that was actually where I thought we would be going by train.

But now I need suggestions for the best part of my family's trip to be by train (we will do the rest by car w/driver)

We have three legs of our journey (all in February):
Vadodara-Udaipur
Udaipur-Jodhpur
Jodhpur-Jaipur

And "we" are me, my wife and my nearly 5 years old (very blonde) daughter. I'm not sure that we are longing to sleep in the train, but that could be an option, even Iif think it should be possible to do the selected trip in day time.

Thanks, Ole

NB
If anybody is wondering "what are they doing in Vadodara?" - then we are visiting a friend there.

Vadodara to Ahmedabad(2.5 hours) and Ahmedabad to Udaipur ( metre gauge, overnight, 8.5 hours) by train.

Udaipur to Jodhpur by road.

Jodhpur to Jaipur by train, a 5 hours day journey.

There are daytime trains for all the journeys you are taking; Udaipur to Jodhpur (with a change at Marwar) is probably the most scenic, Jodhpur to Jaipur the least.

BUT, there are lots of places to check out on the route from Vadodara - Jodhpur and a car & driver would probably be the best option.

I can give you the train times for any of these routs if you need them.

Whatever way you go, I'm sure you will have a great time.

I never got to say thanks for the answers - I might take you up on those train times Steven.
And the remarks on the slumber party - It could be exactly that remark that will make us go by train Ahmedabad-Udaipur.

I have just booked the overnight train tickets Ahmedabad - Udaipur. I can only again say - thanks for you help.
A small note:
remember to get a good delivery place for your tickets before you venture in to the easy booking at http://www.irctc.co.in/

i'm sure you've made a good decision, travelling by rail, particularly overnight, is a real experience in india. it's also good for a 5 year old, as at least they can walk around a bit and not feel too restrained. one small tip that may be useful, it's worth taking some antiseptic wipes/baby wipes - your hands get quite dirty travelling by rail and children do tend to put their fingers in their mouths.

have fun!

We have bought a large box of those - I read somewhere in another thread that they are very useful for just about everything. I think it was a tip from Rachel or so.
On the topic - the tickets have just arrived to my friends house. So again - booking at http://www.irctc.co.in/ works perfectly. I think I will try and get commission from IR very soon ;-)
