Trains to Udaipur (WARNING)

I was just searching for 'availability' of a train from Delhi to Udaipur and have noticed a problem.

No train from 31st Jan onwards.

By searching for the availability of loads of trains, it seems that the line will be closed between Chittaurgarh and Udaipur only.

This could mean that the broad gauge line from Chittaurgarh to Udaipur is ready and will be put into service and the metre gauge line taken out of service.

This will be a big change, no overnight trains from Jaipur or Ajmer (for Pushkar) to Udaipur.

However, If the broad gauge line has been put into service, there are many possibilities from Udaipur going via Kota, giving possible direct services to: -

Bundi
Delhi
Jaipur
Sawai Madhoppur (for Ranthambhore)
Agra
Fatehpur Sikri
Katni (for Bandhavgarh)
Jabalpur
Mumbai (unlikely)

I will enquire further and reply to this post when I have more info.

Yes, trains from Jaipur to Udaipur stand cancelled for gauge conversion work from the 1st of February. Similar gauge converasion work is also on between Bharatpur and Agra which means the time between Agra and Jaipur will be reduced by about two hours.
When will it be complete - Do you know Steve? (They say two months but....)

I have no idea when any gauge conversion work will be started/completed; I found it very difficult getting info on this in the past.

I have posted a question on the Indian Railways discussion forum; hopefully someone will have accurate information.

The Broad Gauge line from Chittaurgarh to Udaipur was being built separately from the metre gauge line, that’s why I was hoping the Broad gauge line would be opened immediately.

I will post any info as soon as I get it.

Do you have any info on bus services between Udaipur and Jaipur/Jodhpur/Ajmer?

It may be a good idea to add a reply to this thread about the total cost of a car & driver for the trip from Jaipur to Udaipur (or Jaipur - Pushkar - Udaipur).

How much should a taxi cost between Chittaurgarh and Udaipur? (115 kms)

Trains are suspended for 3 months between Chittaurgarh & Udaipur.

When the line re-opens (about May 1st) it will be a broad gauge line that goes from Udaipur via chittaurgarh, Bundi, and Kota to Delhi, Agra and other places.

There will still be metre gauge trains from Jaipur via Ajmer to Chittaurgarh.

Chittaurgarh is 115 kms from Udaipur, there should be plenty of buses and the journey time should be a little over 3 hours.

I will try to do a much more detailed reply when I get time.

Do you mean the Indian Railways website?

Chittaurgarh is the correct spelling.

Chittaurgarh is not on the drop down menu for 'trains between important places'.

At the top of the homepage on the Indian Railways website is a 'Train/Fare Accommodation' section, this is BY FAR the most usefull part of the website, there is a slight problem with it though, you need to know Indian Railways reasonably well (or have a railway map), this is because the site will just tell you that there is no train if you make a slight mistake.

It would take too long to explain all the mistakes that can be made.

You can get direct daily trains from Chittaurgarh to: -

Ajmer & Jaipur. (metre gauge)

Ratlam, Indore, Khandwa, Akola & Purna. (metre gauge)

Bundi, Kota, Sawai Madhopur (for Ranthambhore), Bharatpur, Mathura, Delhi, Fatehpur Sikri & Agra Fort. (broad gauge)

My apologies for an 'unorganised' post, There is so much info that I could add to this post, but I just don't have the time, so I'll quickly do this post rather than not do one at all.

With trains between Chittaurgarh and Udaipur suspended for the next 3 months, places like Ahmedabad, Chittaurgarh, Mt Abu and to a lesser extent Ajmer, Bundi & Kota are going to be important places for access to Udaipur.

Map of area.

Firstly, there are planes to Udaipur from Delhi (US$ 115), Jaipur ($90), Jodhpur ($75) & Mumbai ($135).

Ahmedabad - Udaipur.

Train 432 ...ADI 07:15, Dun 12:55, Udaipur 17:15, (FC, SL.)
Train 9944...ADI 23:15, Dun 14:06, Udaipur 07:40, (2A, FC, SL.)

Train 431 ...Udaipur 09:20, Dun 13:57, ADI 21:00, (FC, SL.)
Train 9943...Udaipur 19:45, Dun 23:02, ADI 04:10, (2A, FC, SL.)

I remember reading somewhere that the road between Ahmedabad & Udaipur is a good road and that the travel time is only about 5 hours.

Mt. Abu - Udaipur

My guidebook says the bus takes between 6 and 7 hours.

Jodhpur - Udaipur

Bus takes about 8 hours, though it's said to be a bumpy trip, there is also a daily plane.

Ajmer (Pushkar) - Udaipur

Bus takes about 7 hours.

Chittaurgarh - Udaipur

Bus should take just over 3 hours.

Bundi & Chittaurgarh have been recommended as great places for tourists, including either in your itinerary gives you so many options for reaching Udaipur.

Trains to/from Chittaurgarh & Kota/Bundi.

There are well-timed overnight trains (with at least Sleeper class) between the following places: -

Chittaurgarh : -

Fatehabad (Ujjain 25 kms)
Indore/Mhow (Mandu 100 kms)
Omkareshwar
Khandhwa (2.5 - 3 hour train journey to Jalgaon for Ajanta caves)

Kota : -

Shivpuri (buses to Jhansi 95kms)
Gwalior

Vidisha
Sanchi
Bhopal

Katni (close to Umaria for Bandhavgarh NP)
Jabalpur

Mumbai to Kota.

Train 2979 departs Bandra (Mumbai) (Tu, Th, Sa.) at 15:45 and gets to Kota at 06:40 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Train 2953 departs Mumbai Central daily at 17:40 and gets to Kota at 05:20 (1A, 2A, 3A.)

Train 2955 departs Mumbai Central daily at 18:50 and gets to Kota at 08:40 (1A, 2A, 3A, SL.)

Train 2903 departs Mumbai Central daily at 21:25 and gets to Kota at 11:15 (1A, 2A, 3A, SL.)

Price in brackets is for the Rajdhani Express (train 2953).

1A = Rs 2668 (3240)
2A = Rs 1412 (1740)
3A = Rs 913 (1165)
SL = Rs 344

There are plenty of overnight trains from Kota to Mumbai; I don’t have time to list them at the moment.

Goa – Kota trains run 3 days a week and take about 24 hours, I don’t have time to list them at the moment.

There are trains between Jaipur and Chittaurgarh, and I think there is an overnight train from Jaipur to Kota, no time to list them.

There are also trains between Ajmer and Chittaurgarh.

Delhi – Bundi/Chittaurgarh

Train 9020A...New Delhi 22:05, Sawai Madhoppur (for Ranthambhore) 05:00, Kota 06:50 (dep 09:00), Bundi 09:31, Chitt 12:00, (1A, 2A, SL.)

Train 9019A ...Chitt 14:55, Bundi 16:57, Kota 18:00 (dep 20:00), Sawai Madhoppur 21:45, New Delhi 06:05, (1A, 2A, SL.)

Prices from Delhi to Chittaurgarh (Delhi to Bundi in brackets).

1A = Rs 2084 (Rs 1771)
2A = Rs 1108 (Rs 946)
SL = Rs 243 (Rs 204)

Agra/Fatehpur Sikri – Bundi/Chittaurgarh

Train 282 ...Agra Fort 19:00, Fatehpur Sikri 19:59, Kota 05:25 (dep 06:35), Bundi 07:25, Chitt 10:35, (SL.)

Train 281 ...Chitt 14:15, Bundi 17:15, Kota 19:30 (dep 21:00), Sawai 22:58, Fatehpur Sikri 05:00, Agra Fort 06:55, (SL.)

Prices from Agra Fort to Chittaurgarh (Agra Fort to Bundi in brackets).

SL = Rs 143 (Rs 111)

Any further info needed (or train times that I’ve not listed), just reply to this thread.

Steven

I've been reading your post, thanks for the inormation but if I'm honest I'm even more confused about what is closed and what won't be accessible.

I will need to get from Jaislamer to Udaipur - (think would need to go via Jodhpur) - can I get to Jodhpur from Udaipur via train? Would it be easier by plane?

Plus then from Udaipur to Jaipur via Ajmer (Pushkar) - does this train line being closed affect this route?

I've been on the Indian Railway's site all morning and but like you said I think you need some knowledge of the trains. I can't easily see anywhere a map that shows train lines from place to place - can you point me in the right direction?

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

How did it all start?

If you look through the archives on Indiamike.com, you will see that I started off asking loads of questions about trains, I could see (from maps) that there were train tracks in places I wanted to visit, I could also see that there were trains that run along them (from old outdated websites), but I couldn't get any 'up to date' info from anywhere.

I soon got a 'Trains at a Glance', this has all the mail/express trains but none of the slower 'passenger' trains, on visiting India I bought 3 regional timetables (covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, southern Karnataka & Kerala), these timetables showed that there were so many extra trains that could be useful.

I had a job that give me loads of time to read, whenever I was bored (most days) I would plan a trip in various parts of India, I would imagine that I must have planned 60 - 70 such trips, so whenever people ask about a route, you can bet that I've planned a trip going that way.

Soon you learn all the major trains and (more importantly) all the major junctions.

The Indian Railway website has improved beyond recognition in the last couple of years, it now has lots of 'passenger' trains; a few more improvements and I will be made redundant.

Indian Railways eventually became a bit of a hobby, it is still very difficult to get information (other than train times), so long as it stays that way, I will stay interested.

I have made about 40 train trips in India, like everyone else, I get tired of trains if I spend more than 20% of my time on them, my dream is to tour India on a motorbike.

I have now got 4 of the 5 (up to date) regional timetable (not Southern).

The only thing I do differently from some people when searching for trains, is look for trains between big junctions close to 'start & destination' stations, it's amazing what a difference this can make.

J&M

To get between Jaisalmer and Udaipur you need to change trains at Jodhpur.

Jodhpur - Jaisalmer train info.

Look at the map (link in my previous post), follow the train lines (grey) from Jodhpur (via Pali, Marwar, Amet & Mavli) to Udaipur, Also look at the line from Ajmer (via Nasirabad, Chittaurgarh & Mavli) to Udaipur.

The line has been closed between Chittaurgarh & Mavli & Udaipur.

There are trains from Jodhpur to Marwar, then you can change at Marwar and get a train to Mavli, then a bus to Udaipur, I think this would be a difficult journey though; a bus from Jodhpur to Udaipur would be better.

There is a daily flight from Jodhpur to Udaipur operated by Alliance air.

Flight CD7471, Jodhpur 19:20, Udaipur 20:00. (US$ 75) (there is no (public) airport in Jaisalmer)

You will need to take a bus from Udaipur to Chittaurgarh for a train to Ajmer, then you could take train 4744, it departs Chittaurgarh at 15:25 and gets to Ajmer at 21:10. (this train starts from Chittaurgarh). (1A, 2A, FC, SL.)

Another (better arrival time) train is 582A, it departs Chittaurgarh at 13:45 and gets to Ajmer at 19:00, but this train will have already travelled 830 Kms so may be late. (FC, SL.)

Maybe the bus would be easier.

There are loads of trains and buses from Ajmer to Jaipur.

There are no planes from Udaipur to Ajmer, though there are planes from Udaipur to Jaipur.

By far the best (on the web) Indian Railway maps are at http://www.samit.org/irmap/ (if you click on the map you get very detailed regional maps)

The only better maps are the highly detailed maps that the same person sells (in book form).

EDIT NOTE: -

For those who think I have a good knowledge of Indian Railways, Samit Roychoudhury (the man who does the maps) is the person I go to when I'm stuck for information.

Don't be sooooo humble. All of us have Timetable with us but
nobody is like steven, the RAILSTAR. It requires special skill
(love &/or interest ) to be a RAILSTAR. Regarding the money , we the
IM'rs can send a proposal to our dear "Laluji" to give/grant you an Overseas Indian Railway Franchisee to you.
