My 2005 "Trains of India" say train exists #5715 that leaves Tezpur North station at 06:15 daily arriving in Rangiya Junction at 13:00. I cannot pull this train up (or any other train out of Tezpur North station) on the IRCTC website http://www.irctc.co.in/ (TZTB stn). I cannot find any trains out of Tezpur on the http://indiarailinfo.com web site and a search on train # "5715" suggests that train number has been reassigned to another route.

My question is: Is Indian rail service available out of Tezpur and what is the schedule?

I did read a few places that Tezpur is connected by Meter Gauge line from Tezpur Rail Station to Rangia Junction via Rangapara Junction. Doesn't seem to have any broad gauge line so may be that's why you don't see option to book tickets in advance. If that line exists, what you'll probably get is a local passenger train.

There is no direct train now from Tezpur to Rangiya. You need to travel to Rangapara North to take a train to Tezpur. Only one express train is there.. (Train No. 5814). You have two passenger trains (758 NFR and 760 NFR) from Rangapara North to Rangiya Jn..

This journey is simply not convenient, as the first leg is only one hour 15 minutes, reaching the intermediate station at 20 past 10 in the night. For the four hour journey to Rangiya, the train leaves at 2 in the night. Best to take a bus on this route.

There are/were plans to convert the whole Rangiya-Murkong Selek section to broad gauge, though I don't know when this was due to start, or if it has already started.

But if it's not started yet, it will start soon, there's a road/rail bridge being built from Dibrugarh to the north side of the Brahmaputra, and the rail link will connect to the line to Murkong Selek, and the tracks on the bridge will be broad gauge.

(Damn, I had a photo of the planned bridge layout and rail/road connections at either side, but I can't seem to locate it this morning.)

When I planned that route (Tezpur-Rangiya) I was told by a Tezpur resident that everyone takes the bus to Rangapara North, and that there are also buses waiting for the incoming train.

(couldn't "quote")

I received some info from a source who said he checked with Tezpur Stn.

two trains from Tezpur (Tezpur 'spur')...
1)Train No 5815: daily train departs Tezpur at 6.15 am Rangapara at 7.35am departs Rangapara at 7.45 am and reaches Rangiya at 11.55am.
2) Train no 5816: daily train leaves Rangiya station 3pm Rangapara 7pm. Leaves Rangapara 7.10pm and reaches Tezpur Railway station at 8.40pm.

I suppose we may never REALLY know 'til we get there The schedule was noted as 'irregular'.

I suppose these are are just not yet in the reservations system. I note other meter guage trains are. The train you can catch in Rangapura to Rangiya is #5814 Arunachal Express Exp RPAN 01:55AM RNY 06:00AM, I believe meter guage.

I believe this photo is of the road/rail bridge being built to the north of the Bramaputra to Pasighat (it may be "sensitive") ...

Thanks for the helpful replies.

^^

That bridge is the road bridge to pasighat which is now completed. People can directly go from sadiya to pasighat without requiring another river crossing. that bridge is not over brahmaputra, its some other river.

As regards to TZTB railway station, its abandoned and a new railway station called NEW TEZPUR is ready near Dekargaon some 2-3 kms north of the original station.

The railway ministed has given 3 passenger (BG) trains to Tezpur this year once the gauge conversion is done-

Tezpur rangiya
Tezpur Guwahati
Tezpur New Jalpaiguri (all passengers).

The exact time will be known later.

If railways are not aquestion for you (connectivity being more important) then i suggest you go to Kamakhya railway station (KYQ) and over to adabari in the near vicinity from where shared jeeps go to tezpur taking 100 rs/person and taking 4 hrs for 160 kms.

Alternately, you can also take Silghat-dhubri rajya rani exp from Guwahati in the morning and get down at Silghat town. cross the river by ferry or koliabor setu (road bridge over b'putra) and you will reach Tezpur on the other side.

I think that you may have to revise your plan. Tezpur station is currently closed as the line is being converted from metre gauge to broad gauge.
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.
