Trains Kochi/Varkala to Mysore/Chennai?

Looking for the easiest &/or quickest way to get from Kochi to Mysore, or from Varkala (or nearby Kollam or Trivandrum) to Mysore for a night, then on to Chennai. I prefer train travel, but will bus some of the way if necessary.

Any ideas?...LP doesn't say much about connecting in these directions, so I'd appreciate some help.

Realistically, you will have to get an overnight bus from Cochin.

The best route to take (though you don't have the time) would be a bus or train to Coimbatore (another station for Coimbatore is Podanur), then go to Mettupalaiyam and get the toy train to Ooty (very scenic journey), then a 3-hour bus trip to Mysore.

I liked Mysore, but feel you're wasting your time to go all that way for 1 day.

There is a well-timed overnight train from Varkala to Madurai (Sleeper class only), then overnight trains from Madurai to Chennai.

Madurai is OK, certainly worth a day on the way to Chennai.
