I have been looking on the Indian railways site for trains to Udaipur in february (9765) Lake City Express Dep Jaipur 20:00 Hrs and Udaipur City 07:20  All days
(9615) Chetak Express Dep Jaipur 20:40 and Arr Udaipur City 09:00

the site comes up with "Train no longer stops at this station" does anyone know if this is an error?

yeah i think i do.

the chetak express starts from new delhi and not jaipur. on its way to udaipur, it passes through jaipur but does not stop there.
so you have 2 options here basically.
one > take the lace city express from jaipur to udaipur, which is the preffered train for most when it comes to making this particular journey.
two > go to a place called "ringa's junction (RGS)" which is a little less than 25 km away from jaipur, and board the "chatak express" from there. trains comes at 1935 nd leaves RGS at 1945, so you will have a good 10 minutes to get on it.

i advise you to opt for the former option. if you dont mind i'd lke to here which cities in rajasthan you intend to cover. most foreigners travel more than they need to by choosing very crcutous routes and itenaries. and when you go to udaipur, do not skip a trp to a place called "chittoregarh". it has the most awesome (right up there with daulatabad in aurangabad), as well as legendary of forts, in indian and rajasthani history. bon voyage.

i think 5 days in delhi is a bit much. if you do not mind will you just let me know which places in india you'd like to see and whats the tme frame. i could suggest a complete itenary. the mumbai - delhi thing stays in place (though t would have been better if you had finished wth aurangabad from mumbai itself). i done a lot of this "schedule fixng" myself recently. its fun. also let me know which place are u leaving india from.. mumbai or delhi or what?

The reason 5 days in delhi was that we'd planned to visit Agra from Delhi, the place we are staying has a really good reputation and organises day trips which we will do, its called the Master Paying Guest House, New Delhi, the owner has been fantastic and forwared on our train tickets without any payment for postage, after that we planned to go to Jaipur then onto Udapuir then Aurangabad then Goa, after Delhi nothing has been fixed although I have booked at the Madhuban in Jaipur for 2 nights and we wanted to see Jaipur and have read all of the warnings but well keep an open mind on things
do you have any suggetions re the type of travel, car or train and where to go to Thanks, dave

ok you can get your map here.

as youy can see, gwalior is halfway between agra and jaipur. i suggest you speand 2 days in delhi. one day for seeing delhi by "conducted tour" (ask your hotel manager for advise. he should be able to suggest a nice operator - else stick to indian tourism dept corporation (I.T.D.C.) tours). another day of "Self exploraton". check out a plce called "delhi haat" in south delhi, near green park, for an array of handicraft shops from all over inda. you wont know what to buy and what to leave - its a treasure house.
take all luggage and head for agra.in agra 2 days s enough. same one day of conducted tour one day of "exploration". there snt much to "explore" agra apart from the many historical monuments (taj, fateh pur sikri, fort), so just return to the ones you liked best. dont miss taj mahal by night time, esp if there s a full/ near full moon, it is magical. head for gwalior. "conducted tour". head for jaipur. one day of "conducted tour" and one day to "explore". dont entertain any touts. but from "official" handcrafts shops. there are many of those in the "city palace" . dont miss amber palace (ask to see "sheesh mahal". its magic in cut glass). take an elephant ride insde the amber palace a la kings of yore. its 100 rupees for 4 person; if you are not 4 , then team up with others. in aurangabad there is NOTHING to see. but its the base people use to see 3 mportant things - devgiri/daulatabad fort (kick ass), ajanta caves, ellora crock carvings. use ITDC Condudted tour for ajanta without fail (1 whole day). they are very good and professional. is a good idea to wear floaters and carry a torch to ajanta, cos they dont allow shoes nsde the caves not flash lights. a digi cam helps.some dry food, fruit cakes and such like is a good bet. in daulatabad fort there is a very dark labyrynthine passageway just after the "moat", midway through the castle. take a guide. about 15-20 ruppees, and ask him to show you inside it. also carry a torch. take pics wth and without the guide using the "flame torch" - yeah thats what he will use!!!) dont thoink twice about seeing the "labyrinth"... you will remember it a long time. for ellora and daulatabad, it will take one day.so 2 days in aurangabad. i guess u need to come to pune to go to goa or try and find out if its possible to head for goa straight from aurangabad. goa is heavenly any way you see it. read the archieves here at IM for real first hand tips. i was there as a kid - dont remember much.
in my map the ones shown in black mean "return trips" or "conducted trips to a place and back". goa to bombay has a hovercraft service (shown in green). you could try that if you want else go for a night train.bus is hectic.

let me know f you want any more info etc. b4 leavibg finally, get in touch with me f you want. i could tell you 100s of details more. for now use these 2 sites

ahmedabad to aurangabad night train/bus should not be a problem.

aurangabad s a good place to stay. nice compact small town. after returning from the day long conducted trips of ellora+daulatabad or ajanta, t wont be a bad idea to check out the bars/restaurants etc. use the one called "ctyguide" (of the 2) websites i gave to find out about the list of good and reasonsble hotels/restaurents.
also use a site called www.mapsofindia.com to get all sorts of relevant and very useful maps of all the places u will be visiting in india. they really help. google "map of aurangabad" ... i think i have a map somewhere.... its got all hotels shown.. really helpful.. lket me see if i can upload it for you... anyway.. its there on the net... believe me if you could use the net to 20% of its potential you could get more info than indiamike+lp put together.
give me a momemt to give u some relevant links and the map of aurangabad.
