Trains at a Glance online
Again, sorry if this is already out there. Anyway, apart from the Indian Railways' Trains at a Glance online which I haven't found to be very user-friendly, it also appears to be online here: http://in.geocities.com/trainsataglance/ in a more handy format (and the more current edition!) Don't ask me about copyright issues, I just stumbled over it.

Thanks for the links, the 2nd one is a great find.
I wonder if this is the fully updated version though? I tried everywhere in Mumbai to get a TAAG (2 weeks ago), but without success. I was constantly told that the new TAAG wouldn't be published till November, so I'd be lucky to see one in the shops till the middle of the month. There was a new TAAG, but it was just to cover the period from July 01st through October 31st. I wonder if this is the version in the 2nd link? Is there a way to find out when the pages first appeared on the Net?

Good question Steven, glad you liked it. I looked around a bit for DNS Tools and the likes but doesn't seem to help us further. You'd think it must be possible, hopefully some geek will be back on this. Does the site provide an email address? Looks like your alley
Should this Seat 61 fellow (other thread, it's where I got the link actually) not be invited to become an honorary member and pronto btw? Well, not like we're not getting by with you He has the good taste to link to IM on top his page btw. Ahem to your thread even I see now! Now tell me there's no connections here...Last edited by machadinha : Nov 25th, 2006 at 15:17. |

On Time Tables
The print editions of all the zonal railway timetables as well as TAAG are brought out each year, effective July 1.
They may not become available at the smaller stations till several months thereafter. Many ingenious publishers bring out their own rail and road guides - the all-in-ones. Out to make a quick buck, these guides are a real waste of money, time and effort, coz their schedules are inaccurate and unreliable. Touts in print ! |

OK thanks to Steven who pointed this out, it looks like the Indian Railways site has just had a major overhaul, greatly improving the accessibility of some of their more esoteric hidden niches. See http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ , and including this new Trains at a Glance section at http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/Tag2007/ Woohoo!!!

The Compleat India Tourist
I'm almost disappointed that "Trains at a Glance" is available on-line.
I felt myself the compleat well prepared tourist with my print TAAG and most recent India Lonely Planet on my last visit. I expect to buy a current print TAAG as soon as I reach Delhi in February. Maybe I will keep using my 2003 Lonely Planet. A senior Indian gentleman, with whom I shared a 2AC compartment, was dismissive of my LP guide. There was a quite inadequate treatment of Indian geography, particularly rivers, he remarked. He thought it foolish for a traveler to carry a guidebook that was so much concerned with hotels and cafes. |

There were 81 trains in western zone area 'speeded up', so maybe 3-400 over the whole of Indian Railways. This has been the biggest change to the timetables that I can remember, and won't be matched again till......well till they change the times back next year. ![]() |
