Again, the railways uses it to keep track of their waiting lists (fine explanation, Steve). So the original number could have been 865; you stepped in at place 9; you now have 1 more cancellation to go.

You'd have to be very unlucky not to get it. Other than that, don't break your head over it too much, train travel is taxing enough as it is As for when those cancellations happened, who's to say, that seat has your name on it!

Incidentally, on 29th September I booked two 2AC tickets on train 2847 from Berhampur to Hospet on 13th November and was surprised to only get RAC3 & 4, 6 weeks in advance. I'm even more surprised that we are still RAC3 & 4, over a month after booking. Is this some kind of record for non-cancellations? Or is it because the stations have a tiny quota of tickets between them, so cancellations are unlikely?

Most cancellations (of confirmed tickets) happen in the last week or last few days, so hopefully you'll be OK, the most berths I can find for that section is 8, so maybe it's a small quota for that section.

Looks like you may be sleeping on the floor while your travel partner has a cosy berth, I done this once in Sleeper class and someone knocked over a bottle of water, I dream't I'd wet myself.

My question is ...in which time interval these cancellation happened..
If you bought your ticket and it indicated WL/9 - WL/1, then the 8 cancellations happened before you booked your ticket.

If you bought your ticket and it indicated WL/9 - WL/9, but when you check now it says WL/9 - WL/1, then the 8 cancellations happened between the time you bought your ticket, and now.

There will be no mention of the maximum waiting list, it's different for every train, every part of that train's journey and every class, when the waitlist limit is reached, you'll see...

REGRET - WL/1

It means that they REGRET that no more persons are allowed to join the waitlist, and no more tickets will be sold.

I'm sure there is a good reason why both numbers need to be there, (actually, I can imagine all the questions if there were only one number given), but that's the way it is, I'm happy with the system, as it seems a good way of keeping track with your progress in comparison with the same train on other dates (and with other trains running on the same route).

##The RAC commences, once the Confirmed Quota gets exhausted.

##Assume that 4 passengers have approached the PRS for allotment of Berths in the same class & in the same train (**in this case, 2A of 2634). Their Status will be:

RAC.1/RAC.1
RAC.2/RAC.2
RAC.3/RAC.3
RAC.4/RAC.4
-----------------
##Assume further, another 4 Passengers have approached the PRS
(2A/2634). Their status would be:

WL.1/WL.1
WL.2/WL.2
WL.3/WL.3
WL.4/WL.4
==================
##Now, unfolds the drama.

##By the time, when another 3 passengers approached PRS, there were 7 cancellations - 2 among confirmed bookings, 2 among RAC.and 3 among Waitlisted Passengers.
---
Hence, the status of the earlier 4 RAC Passengers
and the present 3 passengers would be as follows:

RAC.1/Confirmed
RAC.2/Confirmed
WL.5/RAC.1
WL.6/RAC.2
WL.7/RAC.3
=================
##When our IMer approached PRS for allotment of Four Berths, he got the Status as
..
WL.8/RAC.4
WL.9/WL.1
WL.10/WL.2
WL.11/WL.3
=============
##So, if there are 3 more cancellations, the WL.1,2,3 would in the first instance move into "RAC Status".
========
##Any more doubts?

##What was your Waitlist Number, when you booked the ticket, that is,PQWL___/PQWL______? Please note, there will be two numbers - one is your running serial number and the other one indicates your exact status, when you booked the ticket.
