Some years back I travelled from Chennai(Tambaram) to chidambaram by train starting at 21:45 hrs. I don't remember the train no. or name. Now when I search the indian railways the only train listed is the Rameshwaran exp. But if you query for seat availability, the message we get is "sorry the train does not halt here". Why is the website not giving any trains on this route?

Right Now, it's under Broad Gauge conversion. Currently there is no train in Villupuram to Manamadurai(Covering Chidambaram, Cuddalore,Mayiladurai, tiruvaru r,karaikudi) sector due to this.

IF you would like to travel to chidambaram,

a) Get a Train from Chennai to Pondicherry and get a bus for Chidambaram from pondicherry (70 kms)

OR alternate best way is to get a Direct bus from chennai (Which will take you there in around 5.5 hours)

Hope this helps

Yes , That's also an option But as Villupuram is just 160 kms from chennai, I suppose you can't reserve a ticket in all south bound trains . Most probably you could reserve in Trichy trains.

You can very well travel in unreserved compartment as it's just 2 1/2 hours journey and the following trains may suit you.(You have few more trains but they reach villupuram @ odd hours)

Pallavan Express :
Chennai Egmore(D): 15:30
Villupuram(A) : 17:50

Vaigai express:
Chennai Egmore (D): 12:25
Villupuram (A) : 14:40

Guruvayur Express :
Chennai Egmore (D) : 07:25
Villupuram (A) : 09:55

From Villupuram, you need to take a bus to Pondicherry(Every 5 minutes 1 bus starts) and from pondy another bus to chidambaram (Every 15 minutes 1 bus starts).

And Rathimeena travels (A private omni operator) who runs direct bus services from chennai to chidambaram is also another option & I travelled a lot with them and their buses are brand new and they keep up their timing.. They are covering the 225 km + distance in around 5 1/2 hours. You may checkout their website to get an idea

http://www.rathimeena.co.in/rathisite/index.jsp

Hope this helps
Cheers ....

Dear Mr.Velu,
Your observation:-
"I suppose you can't reserve a ticket in all south bound trains ."

##There is no distance restriction in the south-bound trains but, in some trains, like Vaigai, the quota could be less.
