train timing in 24 hr clock?

Hi,

I am a little confused. I wish to sit the SEALDAH express from Varanasi to Kolkata on the 6th of November at 0140HRS. The train originates from JAMMU TAWI station. Should I book the 6th November ticket or the 5th november ticket?

I must not miss this train as it reaches Kolkata at 1550 HRS and my flight back to Singapore is at 1900 HRS so this is do or die.

Also, I need to reach the airport latest by 1800 so what are the odds that the train will be late by 2 hours? is this common?

Varanasi to Kolkata is a long haul. A 2 hour delay is quite within the realms of possibility. Typically 0140HRS will be 1:40am on the day of the journey, not the previous day.

Quite Right !

cadaz,
You've had it if your train reaches Kolkata a couple of hours late. And this train coming form such a long distance has every chance of getting late. From the railway station to the airport is a taxi ride of at least an hour in the evening.
You better look for another train, one which will drop you at Kolkata in the morning.

The Railways do follow the 24hr. clock. Hence, 01=40 on November 6 means the night of November 5, as we look at it. However, your journey date will be Nov. 6.

So I should book the 6th november train then?

Is your flight on Nov. 6 ? If yes, then you should book the Jammu-Sealdah Express from Varanasi for Nov. 6.

I still say you are cutting it too fine and should look at a train which will drop you at Kolkata on the morning of Nov. 6.

Yes my flight is on Nov 6th.

I'm looking for other trains that leave on 5th nov but being the diwali and all, I'm not sure if I can get a berth. All the other trains are having at least WL 4. I can confirm a seat now on the sealdah express in the SL Class. The others are all in WL. Price is not a problem for me i just need everything to be smooth.

In that case go ahead and book the SL class in the Jammu-Sealdah Express for Nov. 6.

What you can then do is - assuming you are in Varanasi on Nov.3 - get hold of an agent and ask him to book for you in any convenient train for Nov. 5 in TATKAL quota. The TATKAL booking starts one day in advance of the date of journey, so the agent will have to do the booking on Nov. 4, early morning.

If you do get a TATKAL berth on a Nov. 5 train, you can always have the booked ticket for the Jammu-Sealdah Express cancelled.

What time do Tatkal tickets start selling? And will I be guaranteed a berth if I'm the first one in line when it opens?

WL 4 isn't bad if it's in sleeper class. Might want to book one of those and hope for the best, while also booking the sealdah express.

The TATKAL tickets start selling at 08=00 a.m. Better leave these things to an agent.

..............perhaps, you may also travel in 3028 Vibhuti Express on 5th November (whose schedule is given below):-

============================== =======
In any case, you want to go for Tatkal, better choose only 3028, since you have to pay for Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Fare, if you choose 3152 for Tatkal purposes, and the Tatkal for 3152 leaving Jammu Tawi on 4th November (**which reaches Varanasi on 6th) commences on 3rd itself!!!!!
==================
Please note 3152 stops at 37 places, whereas 3028 has got stops in 16 places!!!!
==============
Please look at this:
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
3028 VIBHUTI EXPRESS 5-11-2005 VARANASI JN HOWRAH JN GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - SL
1 5-11-2005 RAC 58/RAC 44

2 6-11-2005 AVAILABLE- 0119

3 7-11-2005 AVAILABLE- 0312

Still RAC is going on in 3028. Run to System and book your tickets, now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

vsp27759,

The reason I chose 3152 over 3028 is because of the shorter time it takes. I'm not sure how I would take being in a train for 18 hours. 3152 takes about 14 hrs hours. Plus I can spend a whole extra night at varanasi before leaving to go home.

Does the number of stops really make a difference? I mean, is it really irritating?

Dear cadaz,
My earlier observation:-
""Please note 3152 stops at 37 places, whereas 3028 has got stops in 16 places!!!!""
---------------
@@@3152 takes 14 Hrs.10 minutes with 37 Stops whereas 3028 is taking 16 Hrs.45 minutes, though it has got only 16 Stops.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
====================
Your observation:-
""Does the number of stops really make a difference?""
-----
@@@Sometimes, they do!!!!!!
===========================
""I mean, is it really irritating?""
--------
@@@It depends on the passenger, that is, the way he looks at the stops!!!!
==============
Coming back, why I suggested 3028 is: Practically, yuou must not be having any work in Varanasi between 18.30 hrs. and 1.40 hrs., except roaming alongside Ganges/in the market area.
------
@@@Moreover, somebody expressed the view, that if 3152 gets delayed, for which every chances are there, as it comes all thye way from jammu, then there is every danger of you missing your flight
-----
@@@Hence, I suggested 3028 because it starts in Varanasi and it reaches Howrah at 11.15 hrs., and you have ample time to reach Airport and moreover, are you not waitlisted in 3152? Then, you can as well opt for confirmed bookings in 3028!!!!
================
Please continue......................
