train tickets under wrong name...

I have just bought 2 train tickets (to varanasi) on the tourist quota but, because my friend is not here yet, i had to buy them both under the same name (and gender!).
Does anyone KNOW (i.e. please no speculation) if this can be a problem. Do the guards actually check tickets against passports with tourist quota tickets? (i've never had normal tickets checked like this)
Thanks...

I have never had a tourist quota ticket checked against my passport, just against the conductor's list. I once gave a 19 year old kid a ticket with my name and age (no mistaking me for 19), and he had no problems.

I've only had my passport checked when using a first class Indrail pass.

You say - and gender!, this is worrying, the train superintendant will know the gender of the person, so you may get a problem.

Buy another ticket if you can, using the correct age and gender, then get a refund on the first ticket.

Note- when purchasing tickets you are allowed up to 6 people on the same ticket (all with different ages and genders)

I do not think they are bothered about names and might be a little about the age but they can get pretty stroppy about gender.
My friend and I, both female, were travelling from Jaipur to Delhi 2 years ago and the hotel bought our tickets for us listing one of us as a male. The TT accused us of using the tickets fradulently , we tried to explain the situation and in the end after a few jokes from my friend ,about one of us being a hijra , they let the matter go. Please note we are both female and in our 40's.

I am told that what they do not tolerate is men travelling on a ticket which was originally for a woman.
