I think you have to book early for the Rs1500 price, but I could be wrong, I stopped trying to understand the airlines (and their pricing policy) in India about a year ago.

A a final post on this thread, i have found out that while I can reserve on line i-tickets for the train, I would definitely need a hotel or friend as a pick up point for the tickets. It is not possible to book E tickets (virtual tickets- receipt on line) for any of the trains I want heading north from Mumbai....in fact it looks like very few of the trains currently allow e-ticketing with the exception of trains out of Delhi.
