Book in advance, as far in advance as you can, you can always get a refund if you change your plans.
Booking in advance allows you the class you prefer on the train you prefer. |

Most trains have a separate quota for foreigners & the ticket can be bought at the station before boarding. Delhi-Varanasi has a very convenient over night train Shiv Ganga Express. You could book in advance too at www.indianrail.gov.in

I learnt something new today, I learnt how to understand women....OK, you all know I'm lying
But seriously, the Indian railway's booking computer searches for availability from the centre of the carriage, then outwards towards the ends of the carriage, it's true. To first time train travelers, the seats/berths towards the end of the carriages are the noisiest and draughtiest (is that a word?), so the closer you are to the centre of the carriage, the more comfortable your journey. Personally, It doesn't bother me if I'm at the end of the carriage, but others have complained about the automatic door opening and closing a lot (in air con carriages) or the smell from the toilets in Sleeper Class. So, the earlier you book, the more chance you have of a seat/berth towards the centre of the carriage. |
