Train, Mumbai to Goa on day of arrival, ticket/class advice needed.

ok i feel really stupid asking these questions but i need to know!
i will be travelling from Mumbai to Goa. plan on getting the first train in the morning of the 2nd of june, think its 9 in the morning. can you get sleeper class during the day? is there point? what would be the best class to take?
also. i will be getting into the airport at 2 in the morning. if i went to the train station do you think id be able to get a ticket for the journey then and there?or should i book online now.although then i dont know where i would get the tickets delivered. i wont be staying the night in a hotel.

I've done the same thing a couple of times. Take a taxi from the airport straight to CST. Steven Ber can give you up to date train info but the first train should leave at 7 AM. Buy a second class ticket for Goa (Thivim for North Goa) at a ticket window and one hour before departure you can get a sleeper reservation from a booth right on the platform. Yes it makes sense to get a sleeper, preferably an upper berth.

Some other things to consider..

1. Stay at the Airport rather than the railway station from 2:00am through 7:00am. It should be safer

2. Train ticket counters may open only later on during the day, in some cases after the early morning trains leave. Bombay might be different as it is a large city

3. Some Day trains do not have sleeper coaches. This means Coaches will be "Chair cars".

The #0103 Mandavi express at 7:00 has all classes available including SL and 3ac and it stops at both Pernem and Thivim in north Goa.

There is another option in the #2051 Jan Shatabdi express which leaves Dadar at 05:50 (daily except wednesday)and is considerably faster. It has ac chair class and 2nd class seats (675/197 rp) but my Trains at a Glance doesn't show all the stops so I'm not certain it stops at Thivim. It arrives in Madgaon at 13:30 so it would offer a better arrival time if it does. I think the ac and reclining seats may be worth the extra in your situation. Dadar is a shorter trip from the airport than CST too, but I've never tried same-day boarding myself.

Does anyone know whether the Jan Shatabdi stops in north Goa? Steve?

The 2051 Jan Shatabdi suggested by -m2- above is certainly the best option for a day train. It does halt at Thivim.

However, it'll be better to book in advance for June 2. Currently all CCs seats have been sold out, but 2S seats are available.

check the status online or www.irctc.co.in the official railway website.

I dont think any seats would be available on the same day.
Its Indian holiday season due to exams getting over and all families will head for vacations.
Booked train seats for my wife for May 13th - 16th . Waiting 35/28.

or else catch the dawn flight on Air Deccan for, what is it? Rs 2000? You can book online. Sometimes that sector goes for as little as Rs 700. If you do this all you have to do is catch the free shuttle bus that transfers passengers between the international and domestic terminals (it's a long ride; too far to walk).

jennifericous,

I have already mentioned earlier that 2S seats are available for June 2 on the Jan Shatabdi. You can easily check the availability of seats yourself on the IR website, without going through any cumbersome procedure and without having to register anywhere!

However, today is April 23 and you have to be highly optimistic to believe that the same situation will exist on June 2, when you go to the station for last minute reservation.

Look for S. D. Enterprises in the following thread.

Is an Indrail pass worth the money?

They will book your train ticket using a half day Indrail pass, they will then send the Indrail pass to your address in Ireland.

I think they will charge you for the pass & 5 euros for sending the postage.

Give them a telephone call and ask them, but they will want to book the tickets ASAP, and they can't book the Jan Shatabdi.

thanks steven
do you think thats the best option? i heard those rail passes are a bit of a conn,
but if you say so my wise train knower!
it probably would be easier to just have the tickets posted to me here.
they really should let you pick up the tickets at the station!
in light of this new knowledge, do you think i should get a credit card so that i can book tickets through the website when im in india?how far in advance can you buy tickets in person at the train station?
ok i know thats loads of questions!sorry

jennifericous,

Once you're in India, you can book the tickets is person at the reservation counter, or ask a travel agent to do it for you. There is no need for you to apply for a credit card for the sole purpose of booking on-line tickets.

Tickets on the majority of trains can be booked 60 days in advance, excluding the date of journey, whether in person or on-line. For a few short distance intercity trains, the period is 30 days.
