Please share your tips, experience if you have taken the train from Mumbai to Goa (Madgaon station)? I am trying to decide if I should take the day or the night train. Is it a scenic trip?
Mahalo (thanks)

hi coconut wireless, welcome to indiamike.

I've done it both ways but I always prefer to stretch out on long train rides, so didn't see much on the day run as I took an upper berth in 3ac which has tinted windows anyway, and kicked back most of the way. I've heard that it's scenic, but I think it depends on how many long train rides you have had or will be taking whether it would be worth it. The day trains, with the exception of the janshatabdi, take 13+ hours and arrive in Madgaon after dark (which is a minus). The faster janshatabdi is quicker and arrives at a decent time, 13:30, but it departs mumbai at an awkward 5.35. You would want to go chair car on this so you have a reclining seat and reasonable comfort, but then you have the fixed, tinted windows.

I much prefer the night train, the Konkan Kanya departs 22:50 and arrives Madgaon at 10:45 which is perfect. This train also stops at Pernem and Thivim if you wish to stop closer to the north goan beach areas.

This thread is about 5 years old.

Anyway, catch the morning Jan Shatabdi (train 2051) from Mumbai CST (dep 05:10) to Madgaon (arr 14.10)

This train has Air Con Chair Class (Rs 680) and bookable 2nd class (padded) seat (Rs 196).

The air con has tinted windows, the bookable 2nd class seat (2S) doesn't.

This train doesn't run on Wednesdays.

When the train gets to Madgaon, ask if the 'Mangalore passenger' (a train) has departed yet, it starts from a station just north of Mangalore (Verna) and mostly runs late, there's a good chance that you'll catch it, take this train to Canacona, then get an auto to Palolam.

If you miss the Mangalore train, take an auto and ask for the bus stop for the Palolam bus, a direct bus goes from Madgaon to Palolam at least every hour, there will be a board on the inside of the bus window in English telling you where the bus is going.

Mumbai CST station is OK to hang around in for an hour or 2, but if your flight arrives late, remember that the Jan Shatabdi also calls at Dadar station about 10 minutes after it departs from CST, Dadar station is a few kms closer to the airport.

Palolem is Big and alotof place to stay.

mumbai/goa train

a supplementary question on the 05.25 jan shatabdi from dadar which i have a reservation on...

i'm arriving 03.35 at mumbai international terminal - i'm pretty sure this gives me enough time to clear immigration, get a pre-paid taxi voucher and make the taxi journey to dadar (approx. 30 minutes max at that time of the morning)

reassurance please !

will i make the train on time - it departs dadar at 05.30?

and what are my chances of connecting with the same day mangalore train at madgaon?

Good news first, or bad????

Should be enough time to get to Dadar.

No chance of making the Mangalore train.

You must be talking about the mangalore passenger (KR1?).

The Jan Shatabdi is timed to get to Madgaon just before KR1 departs, but I was shocked to find KR1 pulled out of the station as the Jan Shatabdi was pulling into the platorm next to it.

But this isn't the reason why you've got no chance.

Konkan Railways operates a revised monsoon timetable till 1st November, The Jan Shatabdi is re-timed to arrive at Madgaon at 16:00, KR1 is re-timed to depart from Madgaon at 15:10.

you may need some kind of transfers. Better is to put this question in goa forum. You may get better answers.

thanks for that steven...good to know i stand a chance of making the jan shatabdi at dadar....and i'd kind of reconciled myself to not making the KR1 connection. i'll overnight in benaulim and get the mangalore train next day.

how much should i budget for the taxi from mumbai airport international terminal to dadar? i have some rupees left from my last trip and want to avoid having to change money at the airport !
