The line from Madurai to Rameswaram will open near the end of May, although the whole line has already been converted to broadgauge, there is still some work to be finished on the bridge to Rameshwaram.

Even when the line opens, the only way from Rameshwaram to Kanyakumari by train will be to go all the way back to Madurai, the line from Manamadurai to Virudunagar has just been closed for gauge conversion and is not expected to open again till 2009.

(from your other post...)

If you want to cover some of this route with overnight trains, why not try....

Hyderabad
Chennai
Kanyakumari
Trivandrum
Madurai
Rameshwaram
Madurai
Hyderabad.

There is a well timed overnight passenger train with Sleeper class between Trivandrum and Madurai (both ways).

It's bad news.

There are no trains from Chennai to Ramaswaram, as I said earlier, the bridge to Ramaswaram is still being converted to broad gauge.

Have a look at the following map...

There are no trains running on the Madurai to Ramaswaram line till next month.

ALSO

There are no trains running on the line from Virudunagar - Manamadurai - Karalkkudi, no trains till 2009.

So if you want to use trains, you can't avoid Madurai.

Question Train from Delhi to Agra RT

We are flying from Varanasi to Delhi airport in May 07 arriving at the airport at 5:30PM. We are looking to take the Malwa Express to Agra that departs at 7:20PM and arrives at 10:40PM. If we run late and are not able to catch that train (we are buying e-tickets before our trip to India starts), would we be able to exchange our tickets and leave on a later train, if there are seats available? The Bhopal Express leaves at 9PM and arrives at 11:37PM....Ideally, we would like to be in Agra before midnight in order to get some sleep before going to the Taj at 5:30am....

No, you can get a refund, but you'll only get 50% of the ticket value because you'll be cancelling the ticket on the day of the journey (or the following day).

You can book both trains, but you'll be losing 50% of the cost of one of them.

To be sure, I'd just book the Bhopal Express, it starts it's journey from Nizamuddin (Delhi) and also allows for any delays to your flight, The Malwa Express starts from Jammu in Kashmir and may get delayed.

So, how long does it take from the airport to Delhi train station? I guess that if we are late in our arrival at the airport by at least 30 mins we won't be able to catch the Malwa Express? I also saw that the Bhopal express offers 1st class AC which would be much better to travel in? How long would it take for us to get to the hotel from Agra-Cantt station? we are staying at the Howard Plaza...Thanks

Too many 'off-topic' questions, They call me 'the train man' not 'the brain man'.

No idea about airport to train station, I would have taken the overnight train from Varanasi to Agra, I'd guess that an hour should be enough, this question was asked 4 times last month, have a look in the Delhi forum for one of those threads.

No idea about Agra Cant station to hotel, I survived 45 minutes of the touts in Agra before I headed back to the train station and up to Delhi, but it's hard to imagine any hotel (close to the Taj) being more than 30 minutes from the station.

I'm the wrong person to ask about First Class air con, I have sworn (again) never to use 1A again after I was forced to use it (for the 4th time) last November, other people love it, and I'm a bit of a commoner, so their advice will be better than mine for this overpriced, over isolated class of travel, but be warned, it's cold in 1A.

Hans - Less than 2 hours between scheduled arrival at airport and departure from New Delhi train station is asking for trouble at any time, particularly so at that time. Give yourself a break and breathing room and take the 9 PM train. May be you'll get lucky and have enough time for some dinner. If you have time to spare - there is a bus service to the ND train station, otherwise take a taxicab. It can take anywhere from half hour to 1.5/2 hrs depending upon traffic (and bus wait time, if you take that route). You may wish to confirm that it is the New Delhi train station that you wish to go to. Also, some folks board their trains at Delhi Cantt, if it stops there. It might be slightly better and give you a bit more time - but I am not knowledgeable about this option.

Even if your flight does land at 5:30pm sharp, the plane has to taxi, they have to bus you to the terminal, you may need to wait for the baggage. This will be rush hour in Delhi. I would consider the 7:20 train extremely risky if it was on time. Even riskier is the possibility that the train (which according to steven_ber starts in JK) will be unacceptably late.

I would tend to pick the 9PM train. At least it is likely to leave (almost) on time as it starts from Delhi. However, please note that Nizamuddin is a different station from "New Delhi".

This is stressful schedule. If you have the choice, I would try to reach Delhi earlier (may be more expensive) or stay the night there and go to Agra comfortably the next day. But in this case, why fly to Delhi? You can save money and take a train instead.

If you stay one night in Agra, there is always another 5:30 AM.

Isn't there a way to go directly from Varanasi to Agra? I am just wondering, I don't know the answer.

Rameswaram & Udaipur

The line from Ratlam to Nimach has been converted to broad gauge and re-opens tomorrow, this will make it possible for the Mumbai-Udaipur train (announced in the rail budget) to run, though no date has been set for this train to come into service.

HOWEVER, this train will take about 17 hours to complete the journey, an overnight train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad (or Abu Rd) then a bus to Udaipur will still be a faster option in both directions.

ALSO.....in the south....

The tracks on the bridge to Rameswaram have been converted to broad gauge and the rail line has been passed safe, so trains between Madurai and Rameswaram will start soon.
