FT allocation
Also note that there is no way to get to an FT allocation if booking via the net.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't ask, the worst you're going to get is a refusal and a rough night's travel. Most people are polite and will be probably agree to swap. Just that you might meet a member of AI(Assholes International) of which I'm a member, who might refuse just because you're from USA, say. Jokes aside, check the chart pasted on the side of the AC car, the age/sex column is mentioned there and you'll be smart enough to figure to ask those young chaps who might help.

6 weeks in India -Dehli,Jaipur,Bharatpur,Agra,Va ranasi,Bandhavg'NatPark,Ellora ,Kerala
Hey there,
What a great site! My fella and I are heading to India 25th November for about 6-7 weeks, returning on 13th January. We are newcomers to the world of India and the investigations have just commenced, but some rough ideas are brewing and we are in love with alot of them: Fly into Dehli, onto Jaipur, then Bharatpur, Agra for the Taj, Varanasi for a longer stay to soak in the ghats (not literally!), Bandhavgarh National Park, down to Ellora/Ajanta caves, onto Mumbai, then fly on down to kerala/kochi to relax for the last leg of the journey, take in the backwaters, perhaps visit some plantations, take in the old part of kochi etc. Several questions: It appears from this site that up until varanasi our journey can effectively be done on train. 1. Is it advisable to buy some sort of rail pass to cater for all trips or just buy at location through hotel agents etc? 2. What is best way to get from Varanasi to Bandhavgarh national parl/Tala....all i can surmise is that we have to train to salta or something starting with 'S' then to umaria and then share a jeep or something to tala. Any clues on how best to accomplish this? 3. From the national park we would love to get to mumbai to access the ellora/ajanta caves but not at all clear what the best way might be? 4. Are we biting off more than we can chew for 6-7 weeks? We want to return to London relaxed after our last leg in kerala but happy to leg it around a bit for the first month with some breaks here and there. 5. It would be really useful to know what kind of length of time we should give ourselves in each place. 6. Is it a good idea to pre-book accommodation? We would definitely pre-book something for delhi, but we're the kind of people who like to wing it a bit and might change our minds and so on. Are there any parts of this trip you foresee difficulties with this? Thanks so much for all contributions in advance! Kindest regards, Miranda x |

I have very little time to reply but a couple of points.....
Train 8202 deperst Varanasi Jn (Friday & Sunday only) at 18:55 and gets to Umaria at 06:52, the train has 3-tier air con and Sleeper Class (not air con). On other days you can get an overnight train from Varanasi to Katni (60 Kms from Bandhavgarh) and get your hotel to arrange transport from the train station. Bandhavgarh to ellora/ajanta caves Go to Jalgaon (north of the caves) from Katni. Train 1094 departs Katni daily at 19:45 and gets to Jalgaon at 06:53 Train 5018 departs Katni daily at 21:20 and gets to Jalgaon at 10:48 2A = Rs 1031 3A = Rs 726 SL = Rs 268

There have been some big changes to train times on the routes to Udaipur, most notable is the loss of the Udaipur - Bharatpur (for Fathepur Sikri & Agra) option, the arrival time is now 03:14.
New times now listed in the following link. Trains to Udaipur. |

Jaisalmer and Barmer is out of connection in Rajasthan because of Monsoon. All the railway tracks and roads are blocked. But I hope in 2-3 days it will open again.

Online Trainbooking for 5
Please help!!!
Hi, I am travelling with a family of 5. How can I make an online booking? (the whole group must travel together, two separate bookings too risky in case first one gets overbooked and then no room for the second) The online place that requires pre-registration has a limit of 4. The india rail system itself offers a reservation form http://www.trainenquiry.com/StaticCo...tion_Form.aspx which apparently offers more but no idea who to fax it to. To further complicate matters, I arrive in the evening in Mumbai and plan to travel on directly the next morning (i.e. would have no place other than train station for a courier to deliver ticket). What happens if the "foreign quota" is full? Is it allowed for foreigners to book with the "general quota"? Thanks, Peahead |

Dear Peahead,
Subject to availability, all the 5 will be accomodated in the same cabin and in the same coach. --------- The System tries to accomodate all the 5 in the same coach, if a 5 berths are NOT available in the same cabin. A cabin in the non-AC Sleeper Coach (**without doors) comprises of 8 Berths and 9 such cabins would be there, totalling to 72 berths.. ........... Same is the position in AC.3 Tier, but there will be only 8 cabins (**without doors), thus totalling to 64 berths. .............. In AC.2 Tier, a cabin comrpises of 6 Berths only but with curtains, and there will be 7 such cabins and in the 8th cabin there will be only 4 Berths, thus making the total to 46 Berths =========== Perhaps, you may opt for E-Ticketing and get the Tickets printed in your Computer. ========= V.Srinivasa Prasad 6.11.2006/16.55 hrs. |

We are trying to book trains from Agra Fort(AF) to Shri Mahabirji (SMBJ) but when we enter the details into the IRCTC site the train we want is not an option to buy a ticket on. There are also other trains that do not come up. It this because these are not the first or last station on the line? The train number we want is 282 at 19:00 only number that will appear is 9038 which does not run on the day we need. Could this be because the trains are fully booked?
Any help would be great, Cheers Loz |

), just that it was under construction & inoperational or sth. Man, that thing seems harder to come to grips with than the paper edition even! Handy if needed no doubt.

Railways to sell tickets at petrol pumps
After enlisting the services of several banks and post offices to sell its tickets, Railways now plan to utilise thousands of petrol pumps across the country for the pupose.
Indian Railways is also launching call centres throughout the country which will be connected with a single number (139). Railways have already tied up with SBI to install atleast 8,000 ATMS at stations across the country which will allow passengers to make reservations or cancel their tickets.

On the first page, you select the stations, date, ticket type and class, then click on GO. You're then taken to the second page, HOWEVER, the second page is identical to the first, you have to scroll down the page to see the additional info on the second page. Hope this helps. |
