In terms of India and Indian Railways knowledge...
He is more Indian than Indians....... Afterall, it were English who brought Railways to India

Your info was EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks. Hey, what's in Jaipur? Is it that big a deal? We're running short on time, and wondered if that or Agra should be our stop between Delhi and Varanasi.
And my friend made me ask this: Do we need mosquitoe netting/deet for Aug 25-24? Thanks! J Quote:

Steven, last year you gave my wife and me great information on how to navigate Mumbai's Victoria Terminus to find our platform! Wondered if you can do the same for the New Delhi Station? We will take the Shatabdi Express from NDelhi to Agra, early morning. I was also wondering if is it worth taking a later train from Hazrat Nizamuddin Station because it might be smaller and less of a hassle? Of course, the question, then becomes: how long would it take to get from Paharganj to Hazrat?

I've just been reading the Railway Budget.
There are 57 new trains including.... Kolkata-Bikaner Express (weekly), via Nagore. Running a train from W.Bengal to Rajasthan via Tamil Nadu does seem a little indirect even for IR !!! Last edited by dominoes : Jul 4th, 2009 at 06:06. Reason: spelling error |

Jodhpur-Chennai it seems, yes. Mondays (to) only. 44 Hours.
http://erail.in/?T=JU:Jodhpur_Jn.:MAS:Chennai_ Central . Mind, these guys will be unlikely to have incorporated the latest amendments yet (which came out only yesterday or so). WB-TN-Rajasthan hm? Well, maybe for a tourist (domestic or foreign) train.

btw On rereading that, it seems absurd indeed.
My guess and knowing India would be there exists another Nagore more closely fitting the line. |

Thanks for that link, Mach (you were quick!). Mmm - very long journey.. It's certainly a proposition though for the Chennai tourists that we get here in Divali and Christmas New Year holidays - quite a large number come then.

Hello (again)
I posted a while ago (South India - So much to do, not enough time!) and received some very helpful replies. Unfortunately - I've had to forgo the tour but I was wondering if anyone could help me? Basically what I want to do is go from Pondicherry to Madurai to Kanyakumari (Nagercoil) to Cochin to Ooty to Bangalore and then to Chennai spending a few days in each place? Would anyone be able to help me out with station codes or anything? I do keep trying the southernrainlways website but it keeps giving me error messages. It's going to be me and my sister travelling so would probably prefer AC accomodation for night (whatever the safest option is) and are more than happy to travel with locals (for the experience) if they are day journeys? Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated. In the meantime - I will try and read through some of the threads to see if this question has already been answered! ![]() |

Wikipedia has a good list of station codes here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ons_in_In dia . Note it's pretty massive (and full of hyperlinks) & hence slow-loading.
http://erail.in/ Allows you to put just the first letters of a town name, then come up with whatever options it finds for you. So adding or removing an H or whatever may get you a long way here. Note for obscurer stations (that aren't listed in their standard list), you have to hit the button "all stations" at top left. Likewise, to find possible alternative spellings of a place, I will again often revert to W'pedia, or just to the web of course. Finally, to minimize possible disappointments, such alternative train findings should always be double-checked with the official Railways site, at http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ . I've no mind to cover your itinerary right now, sorry. But hope this helps some. |

There is no direct train from Pondicherry. You can take a train from Villupuram to Madurai. From Cochin take a train to Metypalayan or Coimbatore to go towards ooty. There are direct trains that go further to kanyakumari than Nagercoil.Rest stations are pretty straight forwars searches. Use irctc.co.in or erail.in for checking avialability, travel times etc.

Smilez' queries
The erail site is easier to navigate than the Southern Railway site.
http://www.erail.in/ Pondy PDY to Madurai MDU: Best take a taxi from Pondy to Villupuram VM (although there are a few trains from Pondy to Villupuram). From VM there are many trains to MDU, both day and night. MDU to Nagercoil NCJ or Kanniyakumari CAPE: Many trains MDU to NCJ; for CAPE, try #2665, lv MDU 0630, ar CAPE 1125, but it only runs on Wednesday. There are a couple of others but they leave MDU in the middle of the night. CAPE to Kochi/Ernakulam ERN (Ernakulam town, north station) or ERS (Ernakulam Junction, south station): #6382, lv CAPE 0530, ar ERN 1250 #6525, lv CAPE 1030, ar ERN 1755 A few more options available if you leave from NCJ. ERN/S to Ooty (Udagamandalam) UAM: #2258, lv ERN 0015, ar Coimbatore CBE 0415 (TuThSa only) #2671, lv CBE 0515, ar Mettupalayam MTP 0615 #662, lv MTP 0710, ar UAM 1200 Or take an earlier train from ERN/S and stay overnight at CBE. The retiring rooms at the station are Ok, and there are lots of decent hotels close to the station. UAM to Bangalore SBC: #661, lv UAM 1500, ar MTP 1835 #2672, lv MTP 1945, ar CBE 2030 #6525, lv CBE 2245, ar SBC 0655 Alternatively, take a bus or minibus from Ooty to Mysore MYS, then to Bangalore by train. Mysore is well worth a visit. There are several trains MYS to SBC. SBC to Chennai MAS: lots of trains, both day and night |
