You may come to Ambala/Pathankot by bus and then take a train or you may take a direct bus to Delhi from Dharamshala.
For Rishikesh - Dharmshala, come to Haridwar, many buses are available. It's full day or full night journey !

Delhi-Pathankot-Dharamsala-Pathankot-Rishikesh-Delhi works better because of a well timed overnight train from Chakki Bank (Pathankot) direct to Rishikesh.
Train 4610, Chakki Bank 20.30, Rishikesh 08.00 (2A, 3A, SL.) Many overnight trains from Delhi to Chakki Bank or Pathankot (in both directions, then bus to Dharamsala or train to Kangra station for Pathankot. Daytime and overnight trains from Haridwar to Delhi (both directions). Use www.erail.in to search for trains. |

Trains
Hi sorry a little confused. So i can i get a train from Rishikesh to Pathankot then a bus to Dharamsala? I didn't think there was a train station in Rishikesh. So the train to Dharamsala from Rishikesh is train number 4610. I can't seem to find this on the train sites. I would prefer to take a night train to Dharamsala.
Thank you |

I'm trying to help tourists in my spare time, and I certainly havn't got time to get into all those issues. I was at Pathankot station late at night on my last trip, and it was more deserted than I expected, so maybe not a place to be for a person travelling alone at 02:00 in the morning, I still remember my guidebook teling me that Pathankot isn't a safe place at night, though I don't normally take any notice of that kind of advice. Bus, yes, most likely in the morning. Taxi, yes, always taxis in India. Cost - no idea Time - no idea Visa - no idea Remember that I did say the other way was better (Delhi-Dharamsala-Rishikesh), and at no time did I say that Delhi-Rishikesh-Dharamsala had good transport options. I do not recommend you use this train to get from Rishikesh to Pathankot. I'll assume that you have good reasons why you must go to Rishikesh first, because it's not difficult to change the order around. And regarding your next post, Try searching for Chakki Bank station (CHKB) as I mentioned earlier. |

No, I'm not suggesting you go back to Delhi.
There are 2 ways to go.... 1, Delhi - Rishikesh - Dharamsala - Delhi or 2, Delhi - Dharamsala - Rishikesh - Delhi I suggested that option 2 would be the better way to go because there is a better option for the Dharamsala - Rishikesh section. If you must go to Rishikesh before Dharamsala, then use buses to get from Rishikesh/Haridwar to Dharamsala. |
