FYI: The latest version of Trains At A Glance (2008-2009) is available online at:
http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/Tag0809/ The top of this thread still lists the 2007-2008 TAG, so I thought I'm not sure if anyone is aware of the newer version. I found it on a hunch by guessing the the URL based on the 2007-2008 address (http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/Tag0708/) ![]() |

It's silly they don't have 1 fixed URL for it yes, then others if they want to for past or various editions. As it is now, any external link to it is never good for longer than a year.
Oh well. The finer points of (Indian, and certainly beyond as well) webmastering. Anyway, thanks for dropping the URL, it can't hurt to do so occasionally I guess And: Clever on the surmising of the correct URL. It can always be found from their homepage, http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ .

If I had time, I'd start this whole thread again, it's looking a little dated and boring. |

The Ambience may differ, but I find my train in India the same way as in UK --- by the sign boards and displays, which will give the platform number.
If you 'avail the services' of a porter, after one glance at your ticket he will whisk you and your luggage to the right carriage of the right train immediately!

Heheh. I'd been thinking how does one go about this; my memory fails me though.
I think, like Nick says, basically and in practice it isn't a big deal. Between reading whatever signs and notice boards (provided they're in a script you understand -- this will usually be the case, but not in all corners of the country) (and checking the train itself, which will have reservation charts and stuff posted) and asking around (and being prepared to get a different answer by anyone you ask), you'll normally get there alright. A thing that may bear repeating: From many queries here, people seem to think if you haven't found your precise carriage or seat, you can't hop on. This isn't the case of course; just like at home, and provided you have a valid ticket, if your train is leaving, just hop on board anywhere on the train already, then sort it out from there. (I should add I'll really have missed my ride whether by bus or train -- or jumped on the completely wrong one -- a few times just because of standing at the wrong platform or getting my local advice mixed up. Hey, it's India, you know. Consider it an adventure if you end up at the wrong side of the country -- and need I say that is an exaggeration anyway. If you're going the wrong way, there'll be a connection back. Never to fret, and people including ticket examiners and so on will generally be eager to help you out. Remember you're the dumb foreigner, and they're there to help and protect you. This may often work to your advantage really. Whereas a local might be accused of catching an illicit ride or something, I mean.) |

Yes, as Nick says, ask a porter. Pay some money to help carry your luggage and you will be in the exact place for your carriage even if the train hasn't stopped. And at the same time you are helping a man feed himself and his family.
I do this everytime I catch a train.

4033 will depart from platform 1A.
http://www.trainenquiry.com/indexNS.aspx (click on 'Platform Berthing' on left of page) Delhi station is well laid out, there's a couple of big displays telling you the correct platforms. BTW, not a silly question at all, I could easily do a very long thread about finding your train at a station, I even took a load of photos on my last trip to do such a thread (but have somehowe lost the photos), most of those photos were taken on Delhi station. |

Heheh. We try, WM, we try.
Now have an easy time, OK? & Be in with any confusion no matter how seemingly silly, OK? Dang, I can remember situations there where I had no one to talk to -- or perhaps a girlfriend at home at some unlikely international hour -- I think we'd call up using answering machines saying I'll be calling you at that hour -- then hoping the other could be there -- so there's something to be said for all this internet BS, eh?Well -- take it easy. That's one thing India can teach you (Well -- driving you up the wall she can be quite good at, too ) |

I am needing to book 7 tkts from Hyderabad to Delhi. Leaving the end of October. I do not know where to start. I looked through several of the posts and did not see any from Hyd. A link would be great. In the mean time I will continue reading through the posts looking for an answer. Oh and maybe stopping in Agra.
Thanks Peregrine |
