All good fun at Lucknow kjluke.

I found it a bit confusing, 2 stations right next to each other.

I'm working on a new thread at the moment, it will be trying to explain what to do once you have your ticket in hand and want to find your train and carriage, it will explain Indian train stations, explain how to find what platform your train will depart from, and how to find out if your train is delayed, it will then explain reservation charts (and RAC/Waitlist).

However, as usual this is all easier said than done, I think maybe 15 photos will be needed as well as about 20 scans (reservation charts), so this thread is still a few weeks away, but I think it will be a useful thread.

Surely you can't be asking someone to look in a timetable for you?

If you can't do that, or consult one of the online Indian Railway resources, then your alternative is to visit a travel agent.

You'll find all the railways links you need to look it up yourself in the "travel links" link in my signature.

Smile train to Mathuran

hI ALL
Yours posts are very interesting for me, i'm searching for journey by train, not to go anywhere, just to take indian train. because, i like take train. I'll go with my family in India on july and august, 2 weeks in Nasik, and after 2 weeks more, I am making the trip. I've read in Lonely that there is a delicious place to visit : mathuran, but they say that railways are broken since 2005. Is somebody knows if is repared. and, is-it practical now? and it will be practical during this period of monssoom?
thank you
and a special thank to steven_ber who give desire to take train. I would really try sleeper class, after his thread.
kisses from France

Seems you mean Matheran.
During monsoon i.e. the rainy season in western india( starting from june and ending in september) this train does not operate.
From Neral which is the nearest railhead you have to take a taxi upto Dasturi Naka and walk for about 7 kms to matheran. You can hire porters to carry your luggage but mind you it rains not cats and dogs but lions and elephants so plz recheck with few more people before going to matheran
Regards

Thank you Faustus, and sorry for the fault , yes I would say Matheran
thank you even for lions and elephants (in french we say "il pleut des cordes" it's raining cords). it was what they say in Lonely, but i don't believe it.
I'm going to search another place.
bye

Is there a different ARP for Delhi-Agra?
I am trying to advance book for July 7 and the system keeps telling me it's beyond the ARP.
Do I need to book in advance for trains to Agra or can I wait until I'm in India--I'll arrive next weekend.

what an easier way to check train availability--thanks for the website.

I finally succeeded in booking the tickets today. Please disregard this post above--I can't figure out how to delete it.

Question Tourist quota when booking online

Hi all,

I booked my first train ticket online a couple of days ago, between Mumbai and Ahmadabad!

I used the IRCTC website. It didn't ask me anything about quota except for "general" and "ladies." Tourist quota was not mentioned anywhere.

Did I miss something?

Also, how do they know if two people are married or not? That also wasn't asked.

I hope I didn't book this the wrong way...

Hi Helen,

you cannot book tourist quota over the internet.

And Indian Railways really don't care if you are married - why should they?

I keep reading that people might be put into separate coaches but married couples will likely be in the same coach. Well, how do they know who's married and who's not? What if I'm traveling with a sibling or my mother? I don't want to be separated, that's my worry so I wanted to ask how these things worked...

I don't think it's very common to get separated when booking together, certainly not into different coaches. In a full carriage, you may end up a couple of seats/berths apart of course. This can usually be resolved by simply speaking to your fellow passengers and/or the TTE (ticket inspector) to ask if you can swap berths, which people will easily comply with.
