Waitlisting Nightmare
So in conclusion after booking 10 WL train tickets Nos WL1-WL10 sixty days in advance for the Mussourie Express i was allocated 2 sleeper berths for 4 people to share ie.two people per bed the other remaining 6 were waitlisted and this came through at 8pm on the night of the trains departure at 10h15 .........i managed to salvage some refunds after a 90 minute queing process
NEVER bother with WL tickets... Rather catch a taxi unless you want to stand around in queues with no one to help. The people at Tourist Office at New Delhi Station give a damn |

It probably helps if the customer has some idea of what they want and what the (im-) possibilities are, or it becomes very hard to help them. Beyond that, the staff won't be able to work wonders: What's booked up they cannot make unbooked. If you find people on this site may go to great lengths to try to figure out what some people really want despite a lack of relevant details provided, or what itineraries might best suit them etc., it's probably precisely because they're doing it voluntarily and unpaid. In a paid position, it will soon become a matter of input exerted vs. expected results & previous experience with the same, and you can't be expected to spend a couple of hours on each client. Anyway, hope the rest of your trip goes well.

I was trying to book/buy train tickets, but faced a bit of problem. I don't know what train stations to put... I need the following routes, could you please suggest:
1. Delhi (city center) - Agra (city center) overnight travel AC2 (or AC1) 2. Agra (city center) - Jaipur (city center) overnight travel AC2 (or AC1) Are these possible? I am confused by IRCTC system... Also what's the difference between Delhi and New Delhi? Would appreciate your help! Also is it a big difference between AC1 and AC2? |

Agra Fort (AF) - Jaipur (JP) None of these routes have overnight trains, the distances are too small. New Delhi, (old) Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin are just some of the train stations in Delhi, nearly all big cities in India have more than 1 station, basically because one station can't cope with all the trains. New Delhi station is right next to the backpacker area of Paharganj, Nizamuddin is a few kms further south, (old) Delhi station is closer to Kashmir Gate and the Rad Fort. Agra has 2 main stations, Agra Cant is by far the busiest and handles trains going north and south (as well as some trains going east and west), Agra Fort station handles most of the trains going east and west. Jaipur only has one main train station. The following article helps to explain the differences between 1AC and 2AC (more commonly known as 1A and 2A), though 1AC isn't worth the extra money for such short distances, and isn't available on any train between Agra and Jaipur. http://www.indiamike.com/india-artic...-indian-train/ |

As Steve says, IA is really only slightly better in comfort than 2A for long distance travel. You get a slightly softer, wider berth, a coupe which can be locked from the inside and carpet (usually rather shabby looking!) in your cabin.

Porter/Coolie Charges
While I was waiting at Jaisalmer station, I noticed a board listing the charges for carrying luggage. I noted them down, so this is a guide - bear in mind, that if your coolie is with you quite a long time and boarding your luggage for you as well, plus there's a lot of walking involved, I usually give them a little extra.
Packages up to 40kg are 7 rupees per piece. Carrying sick or disabled people in wheelchair or stretcher: 20 rupees if 2 coolies are working; 30 rupees if 4 coolies. Waiting charge is 9 rupees per 30 mins. The notice looked reasonably new, so I think latest rates. |

Useful info Aishah, tourists should be aware that even Indians struggle to get those prices though.

Change of boarding point for one passenger
Hi ,
I have booked e-tkt for me & my family from chennai to delhi. But due to some reason , i will be boaring at warangal station ( station @ 500 kms from chennai), but my family will be boarding at chennai as scheduled. As far as know , we can change boarding point for entire tkt not partially. Is it OK , if my family members can inform TTE at the time of checking that i will be boarding at a later station or Is there any procedure for this? Need your help on this.. Regards Arun |

all sorts of permutations are available but a letter in writing has to be given @ the booking window now-the required changes will be endorsed on your ticket n a fresh ticket issued(maybe)dont forget to carry your identification proof of the main passenger as done while booking e ticket online-remembr all this rigamarole can b done once only

Train Thoughts, Lucknow station, pickpockets and roaches
My first train trip was not so great. I had a confirmed 1 a/c ticket from my school's travel agent. But (Lucknow station to Varanasi) doesnt have any foreign assistance whatsoever and was total chaos. I went to the ticket counter (my major major mistake) and handed him my confirmed ticket. He then wrote WL-2 on it.????? I now know I should have just gone to the platform and waited to get on the train. Still 20 minutes to departure, i wait awhile, walk to the platform and decide to go back to the counter. Chaotic, the typical no queue/line order or just disorder. I hand him my ticket stating loudly "confirm, confirm, confirm". Next thing I know I he hands me back my fare and a receipt saying cancelled???? I'm not happy. After an increasing heated attempt to change this, talking to three different people including the manager, I'm out of luck. I even call my (Indian)coworkers back to the station to argue my case (the train is late, so i have time)--but in typical indian style they cant undo it or issue me a new ticket for that train--although my seat will be sitting there empty. after 20 minutes more of this, i am forced to take a later train (~3hrs later).
So then i'm sitting in one of 4 seats in the whole station, reserved for the police I figure out. I'm sitting NEXT to a policeman and a (supposedly) BLIND, half dressed cleric is behind me and swipes down at my back pocket while im sitting!! I'm already steaming, but I get very mad and threaten him, question his blindness, etc, until his other partners escort him away. the policemen defends him!!! saying he was looking for a seat--while the seatback was 1-2 feet higher than my butt!! and we were in a corner where he had to go around the back of the seats to attempt his act!!! So be wary, especially of blind clerics!!! (No, I never keep my wallet in my back pocket). At this point I'm happy to see my berth shared with just one other very nice govt professional. But not so fast. So, I'm born and raised in NYC, so cockroaches and I have a lot of history, and I dont get along with them at all!!! (meanwhile I'm dealing with ants, snakes, mosquitoes out in the country daily). There are Roaches clearly scurrying around in my 1 a/c sleeper. Let's just say I didnt get much sleep in my sleeper!!. Fewer roaches on my return trip, but so much for paying up for a little bit of cleaniness and comfort!! Be forewarned. P.S. Every other part of my Varanasi trip was lovely, but a dubious start for sure.
