Oh, didn't mean to interrupt your holiday So sorry!

I'll look up the time tables segment by segment and will eventually figure it out. Or else, I'll ask the hotel people to help me out.

In two weeks' time, at this very moment, I'll be in Bhuj!!!!! I'm soooooo psyched!

Cheers!

That's what I've been doing most of the time on my trip, the Indian Railway website has been really strange lately, one day I could only search for trains FROM 1st Jan 2008, I tried many ways to get around it, but only Erail worked.

Anyone any ideas what's going on with the Indian Railway website?

Help

Hello Steven,

I represent my class, who's taking a backpacker-journey around the world. We're going to india, where we're planning on taking the train, we were wondering if you maybe could help us a bit? You seem as if you know the country very well..

I found out what the problem was....

The time/date on the PC I was using was not set correctly, the Indian Railway website (and others) somehow reads the date from your PC and uses that date for your train search.

I had found that I was searching for trains, but the date was set about 5 months ahead, so any time I tried to get info about a train I got the message 'Outside of Advance Reservation Period'.

Just read that the trains to Kajuraho will start in February (don't know when in Feb), and the report mentioned trains to Agra.

The new line will connect Khajuraho to Mahoba, trains between Khajuraho and Agra should take about 8 hours, a further 3 hours would be needed for the train to reach Nizamuddin in Delhi (likely destination), lets just hope that the timings are good for the Khajuraho-Agra section, rather than the Khajuraho-Delhi section.

The railways are finalising a plan to allow waitlisted tickets to be sold via E-ticket, they're just changing some software, then the waitlisted tickets will be available.

Tatkal tickets are now being sold throughout the advance reservation period on some trains, here's how it works.

The railways have drawn up a list of trains who's Tatkal sales were less than 50% on average for the last year, these trains will now have a Tatkal option from the day the tickets go on sale, the buyer can select Tatkal if there is a waitlist, the buyer will then have to pay the fare (including the Tatkal charges), they will then be issued the waitlisted ticket, but if the waitlist doesn't come down, the buyer will automatically be given a confirmed Tatkal reservation, if the waitlisted ticket becomes confirmed, the Tatkal charge will be refunded to the same account.

Only 50% of the Tatkal reservations will be used for this purpose, the other 50% will be kept back for ordinary Tatkal sale.

Lalu knows how to squeeze money out of people.

Sorry for all the posts, just catching up some new developments on IR.

No, it's the other way around: You can book most tickets up to 60 days in advance (or 90 again then soon, see just above), not earlier before that. I.e., you couldn't book a ticket now for a ride 4 months from now.

By all accounts, getting a train ticket on the spot has become (much, much) harder over the past decade or so. Would depend on the flexibility of your overall travel plans and so on too, no doubt.

I'd still try to do it that way. Many others advise against it. And I might find it has become very difficult indeed, or it would involve taking many detours, or opting for buses instead, or dropping some destinations altogether, or etc.
