Anyone know how long and how much it would cost for train travel from Mumbai to Leh. First class or A/C? Should I do a couple of overnighters? Or would it be almost the same price to fly?

There is NO train to Leh from anywhere, much less from Mumbai!

You can fly to Leh from Delhi or Chandigarh but I don't know whether there also flights from other cities. I don't think there are.

The closest you're going to be able to get by train is either Shimla or Jammu. From there you'll have to bus it, either Shimla-Manali-Leh or Jammu-Srinagar-Leh. Takes about 2.5 days on the bus with either option.
To get to Jammu from Mumbai takes about 32-34 hours. To Shimla, it's 28.5 hours to Kalka and then change to meter gauge and 5 hours later you'll be in Shimla. You can break the journey in Delhi enroute to either Kalka or Jammu. Enroute to Jammu, somewhere is Rajastan might also do.

Oh yeah, and make sure the roads are open before attempting Manali-Leh or Srinagar-Leh!

As for flying, if you want to save money, take the train as close as you can get, either Chandigarh or Jammu, and fly from there. Flying all the way from Mumbai via Delhi will be more expensive than train+plane.

As others have mentioned, there is no train to Leh. I think the best bet would be taking one of the two daily Rajdhani expresses from Mumbai to Delhi and flying from there. (both dpt Mumbai in the late afternoon -- 16.55 and 1740 arriving the following morning at 0955 and 1055 respectively) and continuing on by air. fares for the Rajdhani are 4135/2210/1485 IR for 1st/2ac/3ac.

I'm having difficulty getting anything from the IA and Jet websites re: fares and schedules. With patience, you should find what you need.

Jet Airways http://www.jetairways.com/
Indian Airline http://indian-airlines.nic.in/

(flying direct is an option (expensive) as is via bus from one of the railheads (cheap), but if time/convenience a consideration the rail/flight a good compromise)

Indian Airlines operate flights to Leh from Delhi(Tue, Thu, Sat and Sun), Chandigarh(Thu) and Jammu(Tue, Sat). Jet Airways operate a daily flight from Delhi to Leh.

As all these flights are in the morning hours, you'll have to reach the boarding city the previous day and stay overnight.

I think your best way will be to travel from Mumbai on Thursday by train(32 hrs.) and reach Jammu the next day. You can then take the flight from Jammu on Saturday.

The 2A fare from Mumbai to Jammu is Rs. 2190/- and the airfare from Jammu to Leh for an Indian National is Rs.2895/-.

The air schedules and fares are subject to change, of course.

You may find one of the Jet Airways passes will turn out to give good value if you have to travel over such a large part of India. You could fly from Mumbai to Delhi, stopping en route at a couple of cities you wanted to visit, and then on to Leh. We incorporated the Delhi-Leh leg as part of a 14-day pass, and the flights averaged out at around $80 each. I think there are passes of lesser duration available, too.
