Has anyone taken a train from Mumbai to Goa (or thereabouts!). We will be in Mumbai for a couple of days/week or so and from there will be going on down towards Goa and have heard that the train is an interesting experience...can anyone else confirm/deny this or do you have any helpful suggestions for me? I have seen the link on this forum re train times etc but am looking for your experiences/hints/tips etc many thanks for your time |

Hi,
There are more than a dozen trains to Goa (Madgaon) from Mumbai. However, if you want to experiance the journey then opt for 2051 Jan Shatabdi Express which leaves Dadar Station at 05:30 in the morning and reaches Madgaon by 15:50. On way you can see the scenic Konkan region speeding past your window. Book your tickets for the Air-conditioned chaircar, as it is most comfortable way to travel. Cheers Anindya

Train Journey from Mumbai to Goa (which falls on the Konkan route) is full of scenic beauty. Especially during & after the monsoons. I would def. recommend the same. I do this journey every two months or so as I visit Goa frequently for my business. Jan Shatabdi express as mentioned by Anindya is the best train for day time travel as you can enjoy the scenic beauty.
Ronak.

Dear sharonakm,
The Train in the picture is hauled by WDP.4. By any chance, is it Konkankanya OR Mandovi, because JS gets ED.WDM.3A? V.Srinivasa Prasad 17.10.2006/11.50 hrs. |

I was travelling by the Jan Shatabdi express when I clicked this picture from Mumbai to Goa. It is not Konkan Kanya for sure because it leaves from Goa at Night & reaches Mumbai early morning.. It could be Mandovi. What does those nos mean ? Are they types of engines ? Ronak. |

Dear Ronak,
he Number of the Loco, in the picture, which is hauling the Train is WDP.4.20028. This Diesel Loco is NEVER used for Freight Trains. (**For Freight Trains, there is an exclusiove category of Locos known as WDG.4. Sometimes WDG.3As are used for passenger trains. Coming back, the Jan Shatabdhi normally gets WDM.3A Locos of ERODE Diesel Shed.As per current Loco Links, only Mandovi (day train) and Konkan Kanya (night train) get WDP.4. It is quite surprising that it got WDP.4.By any chance do you remember the date on which you take the above photograph? The livery of the coaches in the photograph look like Blue, normally earmarked for Mandovi (day train) or Konkan Kanya (night train) which run between Mumbai and Madgaon. By any chance, do you remember the colour of the Coaches? V.Srinivasa Prasad 20.10.2006/16.50 hrs. |

Good knowledge about trains / engines.
Dear Prasad,
Firstly I would like to appreciate your knowledge about the engines / trains. I was travelling by Jan Shatabdi express from Dadar to Thivim on 26 th of june 2006 when I clicked this picture. I was standing at the door of one of the coaches of Jan Shatabdi Express (the train was at a halt) while the other train was passing through (The concerned engine is of that train & not of Jan Shatabdi - high Chances it is Mandovi). Yes the colour of the coaches is blue which I can make out by zooming in on the photo. I also have a back picture of the train which I am attaching here. |

Dear Ronak,
Thanks for your clarification. I am sorry for stretching you too long. Yes, undoubtedly, the train WDP.4 (20028/KJM) is Mandovi. |

Dear Ronak,
I am a Railway Fan since 1969, that is, when I was 10 years old. By the way, I am a Member of IRFCA too, which has further enriched my knowledge about IR, particularly about Locos. You are welcome to visit www.irfca.org V.Srinivasa Prasad 23.10.2006/20.05 hrs. |
