Hi all,
Perhaps someone could be kind enough to give a hand--I'm a bit confused about the Indian railway system, despite having browsed through various threads. I'm currently in Ko Chang, Thailand, and will check email again in a few days from Khao San rd in Bangkok before we fly out to Mumbai. Here are the specs:

We're flying into Mumbai at 9pm on October 2nd and want to do one of two things: either take a train down to Goa or to Cochin/Kerala...we're not sure yet, and it depends upon how long it takes. Anyways, how feasible is it to do this straight from the Mumbai airport? Are there any trains at 11pm or so? We're hoping to avoid going into Mumbai and looking for a hotel. Further, what class do people recommend? I've heard 2nd class sleeper is best for long trips.

Any help would be much appreciated!

namaste,
jonathan

You have nowhere to pick a ticket up so cannot book one over the net; this means that apart from staying a night in Mumbai, you have only one option.

It could be uncomfortable, Train 0111 departs CST at 22:50, it then calls at Dadar (10km closer to the airport) at 23:05, and you should be able to catch the train from Dadar even if you are slightly delayed.

Having no ticket means you will have to buy second class unreserved ticket from Dadar ticket office and hope that giving the TTE (travelling ticket examiner) some money will get you berths (if any are available).

If not, and if 2nd unreserved is crowded, you are in for a very uncomfortable 11 hours.

As you cannot be coming from Thailand to India for beaches, I would advise to stay in Mumbai for at least one night.

Book your hotel from Thailand, then try and get the hotel to 'send the boy' to get your train tickets.

Train times vary; Mumbai to Goa (Madgaon) can be anything from 8 - 12 hours.

Mumbai to Cochin (Ernakulam) is 27 hours, Depart Lokmanya Tilak (Mumbai) at 11:40; arrive at Ernakulam Junction at 14:20 the next day.

Check This link for trains from Mumbai to Goa.

Indian trains are not comparable to Thai trains (the Thai trains have a lot more room, Sleeper class is great if you are comfortable travelling with locals (can be harder for a woman).

There is some information on the following 2 links about class of accommodation on Indian trains.

http://www.konkanrailway.com/website...eservation.htm

Check this web page for online booking for Train No.0111.

Passenger can collect the tickets from on duty Passenger Assistants of Konkan Railway at the time of boarding the train at Madgaon or Mumbai by furnishing a copy of passport as proof of identity. Passport has to be shown to the Passenger Assistant)

But still it's deficult to catch train from Mumbai(CST),

Interesting information indiaguide.

Has any member booked a ticket this way and picked the ticket up on the train?

I tried to get information from the site, but it wouldn't accept my telephone number (with or without the international code).

Thanks for the replies. We're actually thinking about flying down to Cochin--it seems like it would be less of a hassle and our friend leaves on Oct 7 early, so that way we'd have more time with him--although the fare looks like it would be $110 US each via Air India. We might stop in Mumbai on the way back through (we plan on being in So India for three months, then the Himalaya/Nepal for 3+ months...so were planning on going to Goa for New Years then up north). In other words, one of the reasons I'm hesitant about staying in Mumbai is that I wouldn't mind staying for a few days, but we don't have the time when we arrive.

A couple questions:

1) How would one get to the Lokmanya Tilak train station from the airport in Mumbai? And if we were to take the 11:40 train to Cochin, any ideas where we could stay in the vicinity? And where would we get our tickets?

2) Re: air tickets--would I need to book in advance or could I just show up in Mumbai and go to the domestic terminal? It looks like there is a midnight flight to Cochin.

Thanks again!

Its better to book your Air ticket in advance. May be you could find ticket on arrival to mumbai.

You can take Taxi for Lokmanya Tilak station. But for train Ticket you have to book in advance other wise without reservation (too difficult Journey).
