Hi everybody! Been following the discussions here and I'm hoping you know to give the simple and direct answer to this; Is it possible to get a train from Delhi to Goa this month, directly from the station in the saturday morning. The flight arrives in Delhi at night and the plan is to continue with the train straight after that. As I've understood, it takes 2 days from Delhi to goa by train, so sleeping class is required - how much in Indian rupees does that cost? Thank you for your help very much!

There is a 'monsoon timetable' in operation until the end of next month, so a few hours are added to the journey time.

The following train times are from the monsoon timetable, normally the journey is a little quicker.

Train 2450 departs Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi)(Saturdays only) at 07:25 and gets to Pernem at 13:53 the following day, then Thivim at 14:10 and Madgaon at 15:10.

So less than 32 hours for the full distance.

First class (air con) = Rs 4301
2-tier air con = Rs 2252
3-tier air con = Rs 1438
Sleeper Class = Rs 531 (not air con)

Pernem and Thivim are closer to the beaches of North Goa.

Thank you so, so much Steven! One more thing - can it be trusted that one gets the ticket from the station without reserving them beforehand? I guess I know the answer - "no, of course you can not Trust that" - but how's your experience?

I wouldn't take the chance, the train is a once weekly train that goes through the Konkan region, there is the Rajdhani train on the Sunday, but this is much more expensive and you would also need to pay for a hotel in Delhi for one night.

There is also the Goa express and the Mangala Lakshadweep express (both daily), but these take a lot longer to get to Goa.

Bearing in mind the departure time of the train, you seem to have 2 choices.

1, book a ticket over the internet and have it sent to Namaste India Tours, then arrange for an airport pick-up with the company, for Rs500 they will pick you up at the airport and take you to the train station, I think they charge about Rs100 to receive your train ticket and hand it to you at the airport, but will only do this if you arrange an airport pick-up.

2, book the tickets through an Indrail Pass, not cheap, but very convenient, you will need a 2-day pass.

Is an Indrail pass worth the money?

Thanks. I will try to book the ticket online. Namaste India Tours said they need one week time before their service. I hope I get their service confirmation within 24h. If not, is there anything else to be done in order to get the trainticket at hand?

It appears that it is possible to pick up internet-booked tickets at the Chelmsford St office of India Rail which is near the New Delhi Station. See my earlier post on the subject which has links to the threads on which IM member Neeltje reports success doing this and includes correspondence with India Rail.

http://www.indiamike.com/india/showp...01&postcount=3

I plan to use this service myself and have e-mailed the office to be certain that the office is open weekends -- the reply Neeltje received indicated that the office is open '24 hours', which I assume includes weekends, but I'd rather see it spelled out
