Train from Chennai - Goa and vice versa

Hi there,

my friends and I are flying into Chennai end of November and will be going to Andaman Islands for 3 weeks. We then want to head to Goa for a few weeks but need to get back to Chennai for the return flight back to London early Jan.

I know there are trains available in both directions and I have read some posts but these are quite old so was wondering if anyone has any updated information about:

How often to the trains run from Chenni to Goa and vice versa. We will be getting the train in peak season so does it pay to book? The only thing is I will be in London at the time so would need to book it from there.

We have a few days flexibility for getting the train but don't want to have to wait a week or so if they get booked up.

Any advice would be great! Thank you! PS: We don't want to go via Bangalore or anywhere else.

Freebird,

there is only one train from Chennai to Goa and that too once a week leaving chennai every friday. Needless to say, it would be booked in advance (this is a reality for all trains in India) and you need to book.

Rather you can take a train from Chennai to Mangalore (about 16 hrs travel) and then another train to Goa (another 6 hrs). If you are ok with this, I shall send you the connections.

Hi there, yes it would be good as a backup. I will try to book the direct train asap but if you could send me the alternative that would be great.

Are the trains more frequent going through Mangalore? I am a little concerned about getting 2 trains and the frequency.

I am going to booking my flight asap to Chennai so once I do that I will book the train tickets.

You can either get down at VSG or Madgaon (MAO).
