Train etickets. Pricing scam or surcharges ?

I have booked some etickets. The IRCTC web site shows the total payment as being 496RS after the internet surcharge. My credit card has been charged 504.93RS.

On another booking the web site shows the total charged as 600RS but 610.81 has been charged to my credit card.

A 336RS refund has turned into a 342RS refund. So I have slightly gained (6RS) on the refund.

I know the amounts are very small but what is the reason for them billing me extra on each transaction (unless ICIC make some charge). I am using a UK Nationwide credit card so there are no charges from my credit card provider.

Bank Charges

Pretty sure that the additional cost is the Bank charge from ICIC not the UK bank.

From memory when you get to pick your payment option having made the booking the cost of each is shown. ICIC is 1.8% the additional amount you have been charged.

I guess it works in reverse for refunds !

Definitely NOT a pricing scam - just very cheap transaction fees. I'd recommend booking online everytime, and if you're not sure you're going on that date - book it anyway and you can refund at a later date. Just head straight for the tourist window at any computerised station..
