Train double-booking, upgrading, refunding

Argh. I tried to book 2AC for Jodhpur-Jaisalmer last night (California time) online, but ten minutes after booking opened (I blinked), the 6-seat availability turned into a Regret/WL1. So I booked 2 confirmed seats in 3AC.

Well, now there's availability in 2AC!

My questions:

1. Could I book the 2AC seats now then return the 3AC tickets when I arrive in India in 55 days?
2. Or, would I have to have my friend do this separately? (not so easy; she's working right now, I think)
3. If not, what about upgrading? How is this done?
4. Last night, I noticed that there was availability under the Foreign Tourist quota in 2AC, but I couldn't figure out how to book it online. Is there a trick to this, or is the Foreign Tourist quota available only when booking in person?

Thanks!

1. You can book the 2AC berths now and cancel the 3AC when you arrive in India. However, the normal cancellation fee will apply and the refund will be credited to your CC account; you won't get it in cash across the counter.

2.If you are likely to lose heavily on the cancellation charges by waiting to cancel it in person when in India, then you may request your friend to do so, at her earliest convenience.

3. I do not think upgradation can be done over the internet.

4. Not too sure, but I think tickets under the foreign tourist quota can be booked only in person at New Delhi.

Thanks! I just booked the 2AC -- got two of the last three berths. I'm not worried about the cancellation fee... the 3AC tickets were something like 411 rupees apiece total.

We are booked for December 31 in 2A and 3A.

While we're at it, should I worry about my waitlist for Agra Fort - Jaipur on 25 December on train 2315 in 3A? There are three of us, WL 3, 4, and 5, and I'm worried that we're not moving because I specified that we should be in the same berth (Christmas day, you know)... We preferred to travel in the afternoon rather than the evening, hoping to arrive in Jaipur for a nice dinner.

Dear Pezworld,
This is the schedule of 2315 on Agra Fort-Jaipur stretch:-
--
11 AF AGRA FORT 1 11:15 11:20 1350 2
12 XXXX BPT STATION 1 11:55 11:57 1377 2 Train doesn't halt at this station, presently
13 XXXX BPT STATION 1 12:25 12:27 1404 2 Train doesn't halt at this station, presently
14 SWM SAWAI MADHOPUR 1 15:40 16:05 1575 2
15 JP JAIPUR 1 18:17 18:25 1707 2
=============================
The following is the Quota:-
---
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2315 ANNANYA EXPRES 1-1-2006 AGRA FORT JAIPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - 3A
1 1- 1-2006 AVAILABLE- 0006
==========================
The following is the current status:-
---
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2315 ANNANYA EXPRES 25-12-2005 AGRA FORT JAIPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - 3A
1 25-12-2005 WL 23/WL 16

2 1- 1-2006 AVAILABLE- 0006
============================== ==
****What was your status at the time of booking?
i.e., WL_____/WL_______
=============================
But 2315 comes all the way from Sealdah. If there are any bookings from Sealdah to Agra Fort or short of Agra Fort,, against such bookings, you are likely to get confirmed OR against the Cancellations from out of Agra Fort-Jaipur Quota of 6 Berths.
-------------
But you are almost in the last laps. By the time you finish your discussions with TTE, the train will reach Jaipur!!!!! :-) Not much to worry!!!!!
------------------
But, if you are worried about your WL Status, then reserve Berths in SLEEPER CLASS in which Berths are still available:-
---
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2315 ANNANYA EXPRES 25-12-2005 AGRA FORT JAIPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - SL
1 25-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0068

2 1- 1-2006 AVAILABLE- 0068
============================== =======
If you don't want to waste time in the day-journey (11.20>>>18.50), you may also opt for 9778 where the availability is as follows:-
---
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
9778 AF JP INTERCITY 25-12-2005 AGRA FORT JAIPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - CC
1 25-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0070

2 26-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0070

3 27-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0068

4 28-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0070

5 29-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0070

6 30-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0070
============================== ===
..............and the schedule of 9778 is:-
----
You Queried For Train No Train Name Date Runs From Source Runs On
9778 AF JP INTERCITY 03/11/2005 AGRA FORT MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT SUN

SNo Stn Code Stn Name Route No. Arrival Time Dep. Time Distance Day Remark
1 AF AGRA FORT 1 Source 18:00 0 1
2 AH ACHHNERA JN 1 18:30 18:32 26 1
3 BTE BHARATPUR JN 1 18:58 19:00 53 1
4 BKI BANDIKUI JN 1 20:50 20:55 152 1
5 JP JAIPUR 1 22:30 00:00 240 1
============================== ===
Please note 2315 takes a longer route whereas 9778 goes in a shorter route!!!!

REALLY good point, vsp... I'm putting this decision out to my traveling companions. Thanks AGAIN for your help!

(This would be a no-brainer if it weren't for our desire to have a nice Christmas dinner in Jaipur, not on a train. But a nice Christmas lunch in Agra could work as well!)

Dear Pezworld,
Kindly have a look at this:-
----
You Queried For Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2315 ANNANYA EXPRES 25-12-2005 AGRA FORT SAWAI MADHOPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - SL
1 25-12-2005 AVAILABLE- 0067

2 1- 1-2006 AVAILABLE- 0068
============================
The above status clearly shows that this train is running via Sawai Madhopur. But in the Trains at a Glance Book brought out by Indian Railways, it is indicated that this train (2315) will run in the shorter route, that is, the route of 9778.
=================
This is only for your information.
