The fastest Train is Rajdhani (Delhi - Trivandrum) and if I remember correctly it would take atleast 36 hours..

Other trains with normal Sleeper class would take 45 hours or above..

The fastest train to Kerala is Train No.2432 Rajdhani Express:
The train leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin(NZM) @ 11.05 hrs. on Sundays and Tuesdays and reaches Erankulam Jn(ERS) @ 01.25 hrs and Thiruvanathapuram(TVC) @05.25 hrs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cheapest class of travel is 3AC. The Nizzamudin-Thiruvananthapuram fare is Rs.2410/-.

There are two trains apart from Rajdhani which runs daily.

2618 +MNGLA LKSDP EXP H NIZAMUDDIN 09:20 ERANAKULAM JN 12:10

Fare : 2A Rs2319 3A Rs1658 SL (non a/c)Rs 609

It takes around 55 hours between H Nizamuddin station in Delhi to Ernakulam in Kerala

2626 +KERALA EXPRESS NEW DELHI 11:30 TRIVANDRUM CNTL 09:35
It takes around 53hours to reach trivandrum

Fare upto Trivandrum 2A Rs2319 3A Rs1658 and SL (non a/c) Rs609

If your are looking at speed, then Radhani is the fastest and if your looking at economy, the above trains are better options

in 1993 when I journeyed to Cochin by Kerala express, the trip took 48 hrs as scheduled.
It confirms my fears that IR is actually going back--with more traffic and no new track layings, the average speed is getting worse and worse.
I am certain that timings of trains on Delhi-Bombay route have increased in last ten years.

I don't think so. In October 1998 I travelled in Paschim Express from Borivali to New Delhi which took 22 hours 30 minutes as scheduled. As per the latest time table, it still takes the same time to reach New Delhi.

In early 90s, the fastest Non-AC train to Bombay took 19 hrs.

How do you calculate those journey times? Just a casual glance at the departure and arrival times gives me 51 hours and 46 hours.

The correct information as per the latest time table is as under:
2618 Mangala Lakshadeep Express Leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin@09.20 hrs and reaches Ernakulam Jn@10.00 hrs (about 49 hours).

2626 Kerala Express Leaves New Delhi@11.30 hrs and reaches Thiruvanthapuram@ 14.20 hrs (about 51 hours).

Its a typing error.For Kerala Express, the arrival time at Trivandrum is 14:20 and not 9:35

And for Mangala Lakshadeep, yes you are right, its coming to 51.5 hrs between Delhi and the last stop ie., Ernakulam

Even though the speed of the train does make a difference, however the it doesn't really make much of it..

It all depends of the route the train follows, stations on the way, and priority in the signaling system..

Dear jacob,

The Flight Options are for those:-

i) who can afford;

i1) who have very short time at their disposal;

##The train options are for those, who want to enjoy the Indian country-side and who have sufficient time at their disposal.
===============
Dear incitatus,

##The 2625 consumes 50hrs.5 minutes only. for TVC-NDLS Journey and 45 Hrs.30 minutes for ERS-NDLS Journey :-)

##Since, you have 1995 Time Table with you, you may kindly note that the 2432 when running via NGP/BZA/Madras used to consume 45 Hrs. for NZM-TVC Journey!!!

##The Kerala SK, though runs 200 Kms. less when compared to the distance consumed by Kerala Express, is also consuming 50 Hrs. for TVC-NZM Journey.
