| Train Coach, Seat arrangements @ Erail.in Don't know how I'd missed this before, or maybe it has been reported on before & this can be deleted -- in any case studying the very handy Indian trains site http://erail.in/ some more (disclaimer: Since it is a private project, it makes no claim to accuracy, and using any such alternate site, it is always best to confirm your results with the official Indian Railways site at http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ to avoid disappointment), I came across this very handy schedule of theirs detailing coach layout in the various train classes: http://erail.in/rail/help/seats.htm. (While we're at it, for an idea of what those various classes look like, check also http://www.seat61.com/India.htm#classes. This section is said to be no longer entirely correct in all of its precise details, however it should by and large cover the picture still. The site itself is another excellent resource for train travel -- as well as featuring handy shipping info & links -- the world over anyway.)

Other handy options at Erail.in that I guess are easily overlooked btw: Check Erail's downloadable fare list (hence, takes a while to load) to come up with an estimate of train fares: http://erail.in/downloads/fare.htm . Once you have selected a train in their general menu, hit their "show map" to get a Google Maps view of its route.

... And to add: For an excellent IndiaMike thread getting at length into notably, but not just, the Sleeper Class, see of course also Steven_Ber's Sleeper Class details & photos. (And to the unsuspecting reader, note that "Sleeper Class" just denotes the second-to-lowest class, what you might consider second class. Most other classes can be slept in as well, certainly those employed overnight.) For most other things trainy, his thread Train information neatly collects many of this forum's relevant ones to get you prepared & on your way. Meanwhile, see also Beach's A Guide to the India Railway System and the Indian Train (2003).

Coach allocation / ticket confusion! Hi, My friend and I have booked the 8047 Amaravathi Express train in January. Im confused with the e-ticket I have recieved: Booking Status/Current Status/Coach Number/Seat Number /CONFIRM/A1/0024/SU /CONFIRM/A1/0035/SL When booking the ticket online, there was the option to only book ticket it the alloted births are allocated.... Am I right in saying the 0024/0035 allocation is our coach allocation? Have we been put in a different coach? Im really confused!!!

Fear not. It is the seat/birth number.

There are two berths on a side Side Lower (SL) and Side Upper (SU). Thee two seats are adjascent. One is lower and next one is upper on next set.

| Excellent info and layout of the coaches. Is there any layout of the various toy train coaches?

Thanks for the erail link. It's a lot easier to find trains, or suggested routes, than using irctc. For instance, if you want to take a train from Udaipur to Jaisalmer, the irctc site will correctly tell you no such trains exist while erail makes suggestions (in fact, you need to take three trains to get to Jaisalmer). I suppose one could figure that out by oneself, but erail makes it waaaaaaay less time consuming. IRCTC should take a look at how a train info website should be set up. Too bad you can't buy tickets from erail.

Hm, yes. Note that since I posted this a year ago, I'm not sure how accurate those coach layouts of theirs are though. Use with some restraint. 'Tis as handy a site as it gets though, I agree.

A good effort by erail, but as with every carriage layout diagram I've seen on the net, not totally accurate. The very worst I've seen are the actual Indian Railways layout diagrams. See the following link for a full set of carriage layout diagrams. (1A, 1A/2A combi, 2A, 3A, 3A Garib Rath, FC, SL, CC type 1, CC type 2, CC Garib Rath, 2S type 1, 2S type 2, but no ECC or toy trains). Carriage Layout diagrams. Here's the 2A carriage. ![]() .
