Train between Chennai and Kolkata
Train between Chennai and Kolkata
I was discussing Indian trains with a friend of mine who'll travel to India next February.
She's wondering how to make her way from Chennai to Kolkata. She's currently hesitating between the plane and the train. She's been to India before and loves Indian trains, so she's not really frightened by the 28+ hours on the train from Chennai to Kolkata...
But is it worth it ? Has anybody travelled on this train ? How interesting is this train ride and are there nice landscapes to see from the windows ? Is there any particularly interesting city/town on the way where she could maybe make a little stop-over ?
Thank you in advance.

There are 3 trains between Chennai - Kolkatta.
1) Coromandel Express - Take this
2 ) Howrah Mail - second choice
3) Guwahati Express - Travels all the way upto Assam, slower and is avoidable.
The best stopover will be at Bhubhaneswar in Orissa. Lot to see over there . Visit Puri, Sun Temple at Konark.
Im not very sure about the scenery on route though.

I took the Coromandel Express as far as Bhubaneswar last year. As I recall, nothing out of the ordinary with regards to the scenery. But, as with all Indian train journeys, so much more evocative than the homogeneous sterility of a plane flight.

You said it !. As far as plane travel goes, the excitement starts and stops with take-off and landing (If you are the kind who enjoys this !)
