Tour packages from Indian Railways

Indian Railways has launched seven tour packages to Kerala and Tamil Nadu from Bangalore, New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata and by mid 2007 will offer tours to Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad.

Initially, IRCTC plans to reserve 10 berths each for these tour packages in the sleeper class and three tier AC.

These packages categorised as budget, standard and deluxe would include the sight seeing cost, accommodation, confirmed train reservation, road transfer, tour guide and meals.

Special Pilgrims train

That is great news.....

That reminds me of something

Some religious or charitable organization of Gujarat or Rajasthan used to run a pilgrim special train.....which used to ferry loadful of pilgrims to different places in India...

These people used to carry there own ration ...stay in the train or cheap dharamshalas, cook in the station, do the sightseeing ...at a shoestring...at a very very cheap price

It wasnt a Indian Railway effort ...but a cooperative private effort...

I know of that few people traveled that way some 15 or 20 years ago ...and that train used to advertise itself in the vernacular dailies till about 10-15 years ago

Does somebody has some more information on that...
does it still run.... where can we get more information about it

has somebody traveled on it

My dad's sister and her husband had travelled on a pilgrim train in 2005. It covered the major pilgrim points in the South and the East.

They travelled with a group of fellow senior citizens. Any recognized trust or a group can approach the railways and lease a coach. This coach is attached to different trains. The entire journey can last upto a month.

This has been discussed before.

The Indiamike Train carriage - could it pay?

I also wanted to use the carriage for ‘Mystery Tours’.

There were many complications, but the final one was born in May last year, she's lovely, but couldn't cope with long periods in India, and I couldn't cope with long periods without her, so both ideas had to been put on hold.

I also have a similar idea...though born of my devotion for Lord Shiva.... I want to plan a coach for 12 jyotirlinga...

Dwadash Jyotirilinga in one stretch

It has to be a cooperative effort....lets see if I am able to find some like minded people

In the list of 12 places, there are a couple of lines (example quoted) that have more than one place on them, is there a total of 18 places?

(I typed 'lines' too quickly and missed the n, good job I noticed it before posting)

After all everything boils down to faith.....

The Maharashtrians believe that Oundha is the real Nagnath and Biharis believe that Bhagalpur is the real.....and Uttaranchalis and GUjaratis believe their versions....

THough if I ever take up such a venture then the most important idea would be to have all the jyotirlinga far and wide so as to cover the largest parts of India
