Of course I should have said that they had been tickling the gonads of young people.

Sorry.

I respect your opinion Nick and there is some merit in it however why not show Khajurahuo or Kornark. Its not the nudity that offends me it is the cultural component.I am talking about Indian rappers with LA style gold jewelry imitating the rap from the west. That is 20 girls dressed as hookers prancing around the male rapper who looks like a californian pimp. Is that progress? How on earth is it better to have women portrayed as chattel. I am not against sex or nudity in the home of the Kama Sutra- I object to the cultural imposition- the rape/rap mentality of it. And there has been an unusually high incidence of rape in India recently. If sexy pictures do not influence behaviours then advertisers who influence behaviour by showing desirable things on TV to sell them are wasting vast amounts of money. Of course images influence behaviour. Beaming pix of wiggling servile hookers into villagesof course influences behaviour. It gives men an impression they have the right to just take sex- coz after all women are just chattel. The poor woman who was gang raped in the toilet of a UP train may (or may not) agree with me. Things that may not be so dangerous in a western cultural context may not be so innocuous in a feudal style village near Bhopal where the men do not get the full implication or context of the images. After all this sort of thing is an inovation-and a dangerous one that neither you nor I fully understand the implications of in those cultures. I do take your point though.

This thread has badly derailed. Please put it back on track, or let us close it if the discussions on the original topic are through.

Derailed? Pun intended? Since the horrible rape in the train toilet, the turn the thread has taken is indeed relevant. Shit and piss is real petty stuff. I suggest that the thread has improved.

Images may influence behavior as a poster said, but rape is about POWER AND CONTROL first and foremost, not about some village idiots running around looking for sex.

then perhaps a new thread about this particular incident is in order.
the original thread, as shimla rightly points out, was to answer a member's queries about train toilets.

Yep, let's go back to toilets on Indian trains.

Either Steven or Beach (or someone else entirely ) has quoted somewhere the statistics of Indian railways. A mind-boggling number of people travel an astounding number of miles on an absurd number of trains --- almost all of which reach their destination without major mishap.

So lets all get back to the toilet.....

absolutely. they have unleashed something that i feel will have far reaching deletrious effects.

healthy if they were also allowed to date and have healthy relationships versus no dating or sex until they are married, which is usually family arranged. otherwise, there is no healthy outlet, which research has shown, can result in violent ones.

addition: just went and read some of the threads proceeding this one after posting my opinion on what i feel is an important topic. i agree, we could make it a new thread because it will get lost here.

First of all thanx to john.sw for inspiring me to go the Delhi toilet museum http://www.myworldtour.org/country/i...let_museum.htm . In fact the guys behind it are the 'Sulabh Souchalaya' people who wanna make sanitation a business/environmental & a social issue. They 've been doing far commendable work here in india. So if anybody wants to fund charities, that's a charity that could do with some love
On the issue of nudity there have been some social groups who've been trying to do the same here. For e.g. there's www.openspaceindia.org here in Pune but most of the work with teenagers is limited to the middle & upper middle class who're neither here or there. I'm sure u know of the class, caste system here which makes things more difficult. There have been for a long time talking about introducing Sex education in classes but everybody from the teachers & parents unsure about the whole thing.
There was a huge cry couple of yrs. back in Delhi/Agra with the whole MMS scandal which broke out then & since then sex is being sold even in major news chanels as 'news' . Anything which can be sold as scandaleous & incite people. Even the recent 'Valentine's Day' where the girl was targetted by the BJP/Shiv Sena/Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) combine which depicted the day as 'Prostitution Day' as well as asking parents where the girl is going 'whether she is going to school/college or going to a boyfriend's place? '
Sometime feel like living in a Muslim country. The era where there was tolerancy to diversity is slowly being stamped out. This does not depict good for people as well as country. Feel frustated by the sheer senseless of it all.
