Simple, be the first in queue at the counter. Thats the only sureshot way. All others have varied failure rates.

not really a sureshot way, especially for routes/classes with limited availability. you are fighting with all others who are first at the counter at the same time, besides people booking online & also the "pre-booking" done by corrupt officials for agents.

I had fun attempting to book a tatkal ticket for my friend on the IRCTC website today. I don't know if it's because May is peak season, but the site has become absolutely infuriating during the 8-8:30 am peak slot. One keeps getting "service unavailable" at various stages. I was looking for a Kacheguda-Bangalore ticket on the 12785 but that got full so I finally managed to get through to the final stage (with many "service unavailables" and starting again) for a WL1 tatkal ticket (2AC) on the 17603; then the site accepted my payment and showed me a blank page at which stage I gave up.

I've successfully booked multiple tatkal tickets at a time Nov-Dec last year and Feb this year. Don't know why the site was so badly behaved that too on a Tuesday morning.

As it appears that there is not much advice anyone can give about booking tatkal tickets, this thread is now closed.
